I'm gellin'

When I was growing up, boys got chemistry sets to play with. Girls got E-Z-Bake Ovens.

A true taste

The view from Dennis Patterson’s job site is not the quintessential wine country scene.

Pruning young trees

Pruning is a favorite pastime for many of the gardeners I’ve met. I love it too. In a way, like playing music, sports or just getting totally engaged in any activity you love, it focuses your attention and makes everything else disappear for a while.

Extreme makeover

Excitement is growing as Napa’s River Walk and Veteran’s Park are progressing to completion. As a dream becomes reality on the shore of the river, a less talked about revitalization project is also moving ahead further inland.

Such a deal

Michelle Hawkins, owner of Haven at 1307 First Street, is going out of business.  While customers will not be happy to hear of her decision, Hawkins is thrilled.

What I'm drinking

I’m drinking a lot of riesling, sauvignon blanc, grenache, pinot noir, Chianti and sparkling wine these days.

The best is yet to come

On Jan. 12, St. Apollinaris Catholic Church in north Napa hosted a memorial service for an extraordinary lady named Agnes Weinert, born in the Bronx.

Help stop spread of invasive mud snails

The California Department of Fish & Game is requesting assistance from the public in slowing the spread of New Zealand mud snails (NZMS).

Wine rating system

Alice Feiring, a blogger who writes veritasinvino.com, was asked during a recent online interview with Tom Wark on his fermentation.com blog what kind of wine rating or review system she uses.

Things we don’t do anymore

As I look back to the 1940s, it occurs to me that we did a lot of things in those days that we don’t do anymore.

Picking up tracks

Regarding the recent article on the $10.8 million for flood control and the story on how the project will remake Third Street, I was wondering: $40 million will pay to move Wine Train tracks. Are there any cost-benefit analysis applied to spending $40 million on train tracks that no longer serve as transportation for commodities or passengers?

Junk man

When we picked out our curbside garbage cart, we chose the small one. Not the medium. Not the biggie.

Wine Train events still an 'E ticket'

Some 18 years since it began chugging upvalley, the Napa Valley Wine Train continues to be a delightful culinary journey.

Canine garden help

She sits at the kitchen door, tail thumping, eager to show me a pile of slimy green stuff on the welcome mat. She is helping me in the garden.

With Edwards out, my support goes to Obama

Despite pointed exchanges in the debates and the media, there are negligible policy differences between the leading Democratic presidential candidates.

Keep inherited property separate

Dear Len & Rosie, How do I protect my wealthy parent’s estate (who are both still living and only in their 60s) and keep my slug of a step-son mooch from getting any money when I and my husband pass away? I am married and 43 and my husband is 49. I do not want my step-son to get a penny from my parent’s estate. How do I go about this? If you’re married and you inherit a lot of money how does this work? I would like to give it to my niece or nephew or to my own children if I ever have children.

Hillary's Dennis Rodman impression

I always hated Dennis Rodman, even though I am originally from Detroit. Over and over I watched him do the same schtick on the basketball court. He would wait till he knew the ref wasn't watching, then go over and brutally foul whoever was covering him. The guy would get mad and foul him back hard, and Rodman would run to the ref yelling, did you see that, did you see that? Invariably within a minute or two the ref would call a "make up" foul on the player that Rodman fouled to begin with.

Taste at Oxbow opens in Napa

Taste at Oxbow, a winetasting salon featuring the wines of Waterstone and Mahoney Vineyards, opened Friday in Napa corner across from Taylor’s Refresher.
