5:30 p.m.Napa merchants are on the lookout for counterfeit $5 and $10 bills after some bad bills were passed to at least one Napa business earlier this week.
“One of our members reported receiving the counterfeit bills, which are missing the watermarks,” said Napa Chamber of Commerce President Kate King.
The bills have been crumpled to make them feel like the real thing when handed over in a transaction. King suggests if a merchant suspects a bill is counterfeit, he or she should refuse to accept it.
Napa Police Sgt. Tim Cantillon said all confiscated counterfeit bills are sent to the Secret Service.
“If we find someone passing counterfeit bills, we investigate it. But is very hard to prove a crime because it is hard to prove where they got the bill. They could have gotten it in an another transaction and were not aware it was counterfeit,” Cantillon said.
Anyone who thinks they have received counterfeit bills may contact Napa police at 253-4451.
