1:30 p.m.The crunch, the taste, the warmth. Nothing says fresh bread like a baguette pulled directly from the oven.
A number of Napans got the chance to enjoy such a delight at the opening of the city’s first Model Bakery. Long a St. Helena favorite, the bakery opened Monday morning next to the new Oxbow Public Market in the up-and-coming Oxbow District of town.
Starting at 6:30 a.m., fans were waiting outside for a taste of the fresh-baked treats.
Model Bakery owner Sarah Mitchell said she’d likely give out about 250 French-demi baguettes on opening day.
Napans John Harrison and wife Kathleen enjoyed coffee while they waited for their free baguette.
“We came down for the coffee and to see what it was all about,” he said.
“The building is beautiful,” he added. While wondering out loud if the bakery was “too upscale” he nonetheless admired muffins and other goodies.
“Great selection,” he said.
The Napa Model Bakery will bake 24 hours a day, said Mitchell — up to 1,000 pounds of bread daily. The more than 20 varieties include Harvest Fruit Levain, Fougasse Herb Flatbread and Walnut Sage Bread.
A breakfast and lunch menu includes breakfast sandwiches, granola parfait with fruit, individual pizzas, sandwiches, salads, paninis, tartines, as well as coffee, teas and soft drinks. Not to be forgotten are pies, cakes and cookies.
The 1,600-square-foot shop faceing McKinstry Street is next to the soon-to-open Napa location of Taylor’s Refresher. Seating will be available outside and share space with Taylor’s, said Mitchell.
The bakery will be open daily from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Hmmmm.... In spite of that, I still don't know where the bakery is located. Been here 15-years, and I guess I'm still not local enough. "
