In celebration of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s 252nd birthday, Napa Valley Music Associates present the 14th Mostly Mozart in Napa Valley gala concert on Sunday, Jan. 27 —Mozart’s birthday — at 3 p.m. This year the concert will take place at Copia.

Prior to the concert Copia is hosting a birthday tea for the Austrian composer. Tickets for the tea, which takes place 1:30-3 p.m. and includes a sampling of Viennese sweets, are separate from the concert. Tea tickets are $45 general admission and may be reserved by calling 259-1600.

The Mostly Mozart concert features the Sequoia Duo with violinist Gary McLaughlin and pianist Florence Aquilina in a program of music by Mozart and Brahms.

Aquilina, an avid chamber musician, has performed at summer chamber music festivals, including several summers with the Highland Chamber Players in the North Carolina Chamber Music Festival. In 1985, after teaching at the University of Miami, she moved to South Africa, where she taught for 16 years at the University of Cape Town and founded and directed the Franschock Mountain Chamber Music Workshop and Festival.

Upon her return to the U.S. in 2000, Aquilina joined the music faculty of San Domenico Conservatory where she teaches piano and chamber music.

McLaughlin has performed throughout the U.S. and has taught at colleges and universities in four states. Formerly music director and conductor of the Oregon Coast Music Festival, he teaches at Santa Rosa Junior College and performs with the Glendeven String Quartet as well as the Sequoia Duo/Trio.

Also appearing on the program will be Vocali, with sopranos Vaida Falconbridge and Lisa van Stuijvenberg, and baritone Ted von Pohle with pianist Mark Osten. They will perform solos, duos and trios by Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn and others.

Falconbridge has performed the soprano solos in oratorios such as Handel’s “Messiah” and Mozart’s “Requiem.” She teaches in Hercules, Napa, and in the voice department at Napa Valley College and for Napa Valley Music Associates.

Van Stuijvenberg has been a featured soloist with Napa Valley Chorale and St. Helena Chamber Singers. She has appeared with San Francisco Lyric Opera, Cinnabar Opera, Sonoma City Opera and North Bay Opera. She also performs with Chanteuses, a Sacramento-based ensemble of 12 women’s voices.

Von Pohle has sung throughout the Bay Area, including performaces with the Santa Rosa and Napa Valley symphonies. He appeared as The Baker in “Into the Woods,” Petrucchio in “Kiss Me Kate” and Emile de Beque in “South Pacific” at the Napa Valley College. Currently, he has the role of a Dreamer in Lamplighter’s production of “The Secret Garden.”

Osten teaches music appreciation at Santa Rosa Junior College. In 2001 he became director of music at First Presbyterian Church, Napa, where he directs the chancel and carillion choirs. In 2007 he was appointed staff accompanist at Napa Valley College.
