Mark your calendar. The Napa community Earth Day celebration will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 19 at Napa Valley College, in conjunction with the college’s third annual Solar Celebration. The theme is “Building Awareness and Inspiring Change.”

Earth Day Napa Valley will feature educational and entertaining activities for adults and children. More than 30 nonprofit organizations dedicated to environmental causes will be present and share their ongoing work towards making a more sustainable community for all of us. Local and green businesses will be on hand to discuss alternative energy, building materials, fuel, transportation and landscaping. The event is free and open to the public.
The Napa Valley Museum “Planting the Seeds of Change” project will offer attendees an incredible opportunity to join together and make a real difference in our local air quality. Hundreds of native tree saplings will be available for Earth Day attendees to take home or plant in a designated area.

Community environmental organizations and commercial vendors will host booths. Live music will be provided by local schools and professional groups, there will be plenty of activities for children, and food and beverages will be provided by Silverado Brewing Company, Hi Tech Burrito, Ubuntu and Three Twins Ice Cream.
The event is free and open to the public. For more information see www.earthdaynapa.org. Vendors who would like to participate can call event coordinator Jill Durfee at 227-9997. The Napa Earth Day celebration is sponsored by the Environmental Education Coalition of Napa County.

The Earth Day celebration will be held on the college soccer fields. Take the south college entrance at Streblow Drive, the same road you take to get to Kennedy Park. Turn left at the duck pond to parking in the college ballfield parking lot.
Those attending Earth Day will drive by the college’s incredible solar field. The solar field covers 6.5 acres, with 5,600 solar tracking panels, and provides 40 percent of the college’s energy.

It is located behind the campus off the road to the college ball fields. When constructed, it was the fifth-largest solar field in the United States.

For an invigorating start to the day, the community is encouraged to join the Earth Day river clean up from 9-11am. For starting locations, contact Steph Young at the Napa County Resource Conservation District 252-4188, ext. 111.
