Prep Basketball Report: Indians flatten Falcons

The Napa High girls basketball team defeated visiting Fairfield 74-54 on Tuesday night to remain atop the Monticello Empire League standings.
“We did good and it was one of our best defensive games with our press,” Indians head coach Darci Lewis said.

Allie Davison had 16 points, seven rebounds, six steals and four assists to lead Napa (14-6 overall, 6-1 MEL), which led 17-5 after one quarter, 35-21 at halftime and 56-37 after three quarters.
Noelle Roldan added 13 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals and Tatum Souza (four steals, five rebounds, one assist) and Shannon Rankin (eight rebounds, three steals) each scored 11. Trella Chrisco supplied nine points, four steals, four boards and two assists while Rayna Chrisco chipped in five points and five rebounds.

The Indians visit Vacaville on Thursday before Friday’s home game against Wood, which entered Tuesday’s game against Vintage in a tie for first place.
• Justin 64, San Marin 45

The first-place Braves had little trouble with the Marin County Athletic League’s third-place team in Novato on Tuesday night as Vicky Deely turned in a double-double of 21 points and 12 rebounds and added three steals.

Also for Justin-Siena (18-1 overall, 8-0 MCAL), Courtney Pardini had 13 points and three rebounds, Jess Futo 12 points and four assists, and Britney Hyatt seven points, seven assists and four steals.

The Braves will travel to Redwood-Larkspur — which visited second-place Branson-Ross on Tuesday — at 6 p.m. Friday.

Varsity Boys

• Wood 73, Vintage 57

Oliver Camorongan had one of his best games of the season for the Crushers with 22 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals, but the Crushers fell behind 41-26 by halftime and never recovered in Tuesday’s MEL road contest.

Alan Samaniego added 11 points and Ben Molinari had eight points and four boards for Vintage (3-15 overall, 2-5 MEL).

• Fairfield 75, Napa 62

The Indians fell to 3-4 in the MEL with Tuesday night’s loss. Napa was down by only three points heading into the fourth quarter, but the Falcons ran away with it during those last eight minutes.

Ben Ballentine picked up 14 points and five rebounds to lead Napa while James Parker added 12 points and four boards. Michael Santora (11 points, four assists) and Alex Morales (10 points) both played well.

Napa (8-11 overall) hosts Vacaville at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

• Excelsior 71, Trinity Prep 35

Dan Streett tallied 27 points as the Crusaders fell in Carmichael on Tuesday night. Phil Maxson added four points and 11 rebounds for Trinity Prep (8-8 overall).

JV Girls

• Justin 60, San Marin 24

The undefeated Braves used one of their more balanced attacks to beat the Mustangs on the road Tuesday.

Katherine Lee led Justin-Siena (18-0 overall, 7-0 MCAL) with 10 points, six rebounds, five steals and two assists. Claudia Muñoz had nine points and Marie Eberwein had nine points, five boards and three assists.

Hailey Breakwell added eight points and Maleana Raymond eight points and four steals, while Chelsea Lazzari and Bailee Carter each supplied five points.

The Braves will host Redwood at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

• Vintage 48, Wood 46

Vintage’s lead slimmed in the fourth quarter but the Crushers got clutch baskets from Katrina Husted, Hailey Manning, Frances Bactad and Chelsea Thornton to keep them in the game. A key defensive stop by Manning and two free throws by Dianne Empleo sealed the win.

Empleo led Vintage (7-11 overall, 3-4 MEL) with 17 points while Manning added 10 and Bactad chipped in eight. Husted led in rebounding with nine while Empleo pulled down six.

JV Boys

• Fairfield 58, Napa 40

The Indians committed several turnovers in the first quarter, helping host Fairfield build a double-digit lead and take control for good in Tuesday night’s MEL contest.

Ellis Good had eight points to lead Napa’s scorers, while Cooper Davisson and Trevor Davison each had six points. Joe Gagetta added five points and Mario Giovannoni led the team with seven rebounds.

The Indians (7-11 overall, 4-3 MEL) will host Vacaville on Thursday.

Freshman Girls

• Justin 59, San Marin 24

Jen Cardey led the Braves with 14 points and grabbed six rebounds and Teal Geyer had 12 points on 6-for-6 shooting from the floor in Tuesday’s MCAL victory.

Lauren Cardey added eight points and six boards for Justin-Siena (15-1 overall, 5-1 MCAL) and Preet Johl finished with five points and six rebounds. Frances Dixon, Sarah Halsey, Sarah Francke and Sara Cassidy each scored four points, Erin Halsey and Tori Roomian each scored two, Lindsey Grazer grabbed six rebounds and Jenna Joske passed out four assists.

“It was a great team effort. We controlled the boards and played tough defense,” said Justin-Siena coach Steve Jones, whose team hosts Redwood at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Freshman Boys

• Vintage 68, Wood 52

The Crushers never trailed in a very physical that coach Brett Wedding said was well-played offensively and defensively.

Leading the scoring for Vintage were Matt Scott (20 points), Jersen Guerrero (17 points), CJ DeRosa (12 points), Carlo Mendoza (eight points), Omar Sorouli (six points), Alex Holman (four points) and Glen Lapid (one point).

The Crushers (7-8 overall, 5-2 MEL) host Fairfield at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
