Prep Report: Napa’s McChesney, Gardner place at NorCal wrestling championships

Alyx McChesney, a Napa High senior, placed third in the CIF Girls Northern California Regional Wrestling Championships held Friday and Saturday in Sacramento.
McChesney, wrestling in the 122-pound weight class, went 5-1. She lost only to the eventual champion, Katarina Perez of Buhach Colony, who had also handed McChesney her only loss a week before at the ASICS Napa Valley Girls Classic.
Samantha Gardner, a sophomore at 132s, went 3-3 to earn a sixth-place finish for Napa.
The wrestlers are preparing for the State Championship, in Hanford on Feb. 1-2.
Varsity Boys Basketball
• Tamalpais 56, Justin-Siena 52
Kevin Dougherty had 23 points, three rebounds, five steals and three assists in Justin-Siena’s Marin County Athletic League loss Friday night to Tamalpais-Mill Valley. Dougherty was 5-of-11 shooting from 2-point range, 3-of-8 from the 3-point arc, and 4-of-7 from the free-throw line.
Chris Meyer had eight points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field, three rebounds and two assists; James Thompson had six points, five rebounds and two assists; Craig Cybulski had five points, two rebounds, two blocked shots and seven assists; Colin Chadwick had four points, eight rebounds, three blocks and two steals; and Justin Clayton had four points.
Freshman Boys Basketball
• Justin-Siena 41, Tamalpais 33
Luciano Mondavi led the Braves Friday on both offense and defense with 12 points and three rebounds. Mark Wangeman followed with 11 points and two assists. Other scorers included Giancarlo Romano with seven points, Matt Goetz with five points and Joe Rossi with three points
• Justin-Siena 44, St. Mary’s 40
Romano had 13 points, hitting 2 of 3 three-point shots. Rossi made some fine clutch shots, scoring 10 points, with two 3 pointers.
Jason Douherty played well with seven points and five rebounds. Wangeman had a good all-around game with five points and two rebounds. Dustin Mertens had five points and five rebounds. Goetz and Mondavi dominated defensively with six rebounds each.
