Get a handle on water supply

Dear editor, Thank you, Dan Monez! Finally, there is someone else asking the same questions that I’m sure many Napans have been asking themselves (“What are we doing about Napa's water supply?” Jan. 14). With all of these new housing developments proposed that will add about 4,500 single-family homes and apartments, and several hotels and spas, where is all of the water that will be required to support this stuff going to come from? I’m glad that someone with respect has finally put that question up front.

I have been, and I’m sure many in the Napa Valley are, very concerned about the way our supervisors and city council have envisioned this “great” plan to stuff as many homes in open spaces as possible so that new money will be generated for the city and county. Wonderful! Where’s the infrastructure to support these homes? Where’s this water going to come from? I read several months ago an article in this paper that an agreement has been reached with the state to supply enough water to Napa County for the next 30 years and that this supply will support the expected growth within the county. Sorry. I don’t trust this report. I see a somewhat protracted arrangement looming on the horizon. So, where will this water come from? Higher water rates, of course! I’ve been squeezing the heck out of the paper that my water bill comes in on, and you know, I haven’t gotten a single drop out of that paper yet!
I think you people who run this city and county need to wake up. You all need to consider who you’re serving here: the residents of this county or the these “outsiders” coming in and telling us what we need for “our own good.”

As Mr. Monez stated in his article: “This would be a great time to step back from the excitement...and look at the big picture.”

" It would be nice if the County got on board too and stopped the over drafting by commercial interests out in Coombsville...all they need to do is pipe treated water a couple miles from the treatment plant to solve the bulk of the problem. "

" Lake Berryessa holds 1.6 million acre feet of water in Napa County. The water belongs to Solano County. Go figure. "
