Local report: Napa Valley College women capture conference opener
The Napa Valley College women’s basketball team built a 20-point halftime lead and cruised past host Contra Costa-San Pablo 59-48 in its Bay Valley Conference opener on Wednesday night.
Jessica Zeller had 20 points and 10 rebounds and Misty Lee 13 points and eight boards to lead the Storm. Erika Hornsby added seven points and 10 rebounds, Cherish Bustos five assists, Tasha Jackson six points and Jacquie Willis five points.
Varsity Boys
• Trinity Prep 66, Marin School 40
The Crusaders (6-6 overall) routed their Sausalito foe on Wednesday night at Neil Cummings School in Corde Madera, grabbing a 35-19 halftime lead and cruising.
“We got an early lead and maintained full-court pressure throughout,” Trinity Prep coach John Streett said, adding that his team bounced back well from a 33-point loss to PUC Prep the night before.
Dan Streett had 34 points, five assists and five steals for the Crusaders, Daniel Caravalho 16 points and four assists, Sean Ryan 12 points and three assists, Phil Maxson 12 rebounds and Peter Kersting seven rebounds.
Trinity Prep visits Cornerstone Christian-Antioch on Friday.
• Fairfield 65, Vintage 58
Missing leading scorer Allan Samaniego because of a leg injury in Tuesday night’s road game, the Crushers (2-12 overall, 1-2 MEL) rallied from a five-point halftime deficit to tie the score in the second half but couldn’t take the lead against the first-place Falcons (11-4 overall, 3-0 MEL).
“The key to the loss was not being able to box them out,” Vintage head coach Scott Thom said of the Falcons. “They were extremely athletic and were able to get a lot of clean rebounds from behind our boys.”
Oliver Camorongan led Vintage with 21 points, with five 3-pointers, and Ben Molinari continued to shine in MEL play with 18 points and six rebounds, going 8-of-8 from the free-throw line.
Quin Donahue had six points and six boards and worked extremely hard while being out-sized and over-matched the whole night, Thom said.
• Terra Linda 57, Justin-Siena 56
Colin Chadwick had 15 points, Kevin Dougherty 10 points and Chris Meyer eight for Justin-Siena (7-7 overall, 0-3 Marin County Athletic League) Tuesday night. Justin-Siena led 26-23 at halftime and 42-41 after three periods of play.
• Calistoga 38,
Roseland Prep 33
Despite losing Ian Scerri-Martin to a leg injury and Jackson McMahon fouling out, Calistoga prevailed in its North Central League II South opener Tuesday.
Granville Fox led Calistoga with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Jackson McMahon, who also added five steals, and Raymond Fechter each added nine points. Fechter nailed a trio of 3-point baskets, two in the fourth quarter, while John White had four crucial points in the final period.
The Wildcats host Rincon Valley Christian-Santa Rosa on Friday evening.
Varsity Girls
• Vintage 71, Fairfield 58
The Crushers climbed above .500 in Monticello Empire League play and for the season with Tuesday night’s victory at home.
Katie Corkett had 16 points and nine assists for the Crushers (8-7 overall, 2-1 MEL). Lauren Bishofberger added 14 points with three 3-pointers and eight rebounds, Jordan Price 11 points, Kelsey Zeller and Sarah Zuniga 10 points apiece, and Katie Montez seven rebounds.
“We put on our hard hats and went to work,” Vintage head coach Darol Smith said. “I was very proud of the team.”
The Crushers visit Armijo at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
• Roseland Prep 34, Calistoga 30
After trailing 30-13 with 51⁄2 minutes left in the contest, the Wildcats scored 14 unanswered points to make it 30-27 but got no closer.
Julia Oekter-Kast led Calistoga (3-6 overall) with 13 points, while Megan Hunt and Lauren Hunt each tallied four.
• Willits 58, St. Helena 53
The Saints’ fourth-quarter rally fell short Tuesday night on the road. The defeat dropped the Saints to 7-7 on the season.
Maddy Densberger led the Saints with 23 points, 18 of them in the second half. Missy Particelli was also in double figures with 11 points. Kate Wignall scored nine points while junior Ceci Fernandez scored six.
St. Helena’s game against visiting Fort Bragg four nights before was postponed due to bad weather.
The Saints open their North Central League I South season Friday when they visit Upper Lake.
Junior Varsity Girls
• St. Helena 41, Willits 22
Freshman Noemi Sanchez led the Saints (5-2 overall) in Tuesday night’s home win over Willits with 13 points. Point guard Shelby Zumwalt and Alex Donaldson each scored eight and Araceli Leon added six.
Junior Varsity Boys
• Justin-Siena 57,
Terra Linda 43
Eddie Aguayo had 12 points, five rebounds and four assists to lead Justin-Siena (5-4 overall, 3-0 MCAL) in Tuesday’s game. Elliott Stratton had 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Freshman Boys
• Vacaville 60, Napa 49
Steven Dinov had 19 points and seven rebounds, Austin Diskin had 13 points, five rebounds and two assists, Brad Forster had eight points, and Bryce Lombardi had five points and four steals to lead Napa (3-12 overall, 0-3 MEL), which was outscored 16-5 in the fourth quarter. The Indians went 8-for-25 from the free-throw line.
