Jean Rabaino posted another strong finish for the Vintage High School girls wrestling team on Saturday, taking second place with a 3-1 record in the round-robin Lady Lancer Tournament at East Union-Manteca.
Rabaino, who posted decisive first-round pins in her final two matches, entered the tournament ranked fourth in the state in the 154-pound weight class and stands a good chance to move up in the rankings next week, Crushers coach Rob Lanterman said.

“She looked strong and confident this week,” the coach said. “Even in the match she lost, she looked like the one in control out there.”
Myka Murphy also competed well for Vintage, though her day prematurely ended with a rib injury.

Injuries and holiday-related issues have plagued the Crushers thus far this season, though five are expected to compete in the Queen of the Mat Tournament at Pittsburg High School this weekend.
The full team of 10 is expected to be on the mat for the 10th annual ASICS Napa Valley Girls Classic at Vintage on Jan. 11-12. A field of some 300 wrestlers are expected for the tournament, considered one of the toughest events in girls high school wrestling in the country.

“Our guys worked hard defensively,” said coach Scott Thom. “We were pretty scrappy, which was good to see.”

“It was a pretty physical game, probably our most physical of the year,” Braves head coach Mike Boles said. “Whenever we go to Drake, we expect it and are not disappointed when it happens. I’m proud that the girls got 29 free throws. We just didn’t shoot our usual 70 percent from the line.”

Justin-Siena hosts archrival Marin Catholic at 6 p.m. Friday.

“We’re hoping for a lot of support from the crowd,” Boles said.

• Vintage struggles in preseason

The Crushers dropped to 0-4 this preseason, notching losses to Skyline of Oakland (68-37), Franklin of Sacramento (55-45), Sheldon of Sacramento (62-50) and Hercules (56-55).

“This was an extremely tough preseason,” Vintage coach Tony Rubio said. “All four of those schools had great programs and talented athletes.”

Vintage’s squad is made up of returning sophomores Alex Peterson, Sammy Davis, Reed Huddleston, John Hodge, Christian Efe and David Oyemikendi, sophomore newcomer Bryan Webster and freshmen Kenny Laprelle, Demitri Rivera and Adrian Moldanado.

“I’m really pleased with how hard this group works,” Rubio said, adding that Rivera, Peterson, Laprelle, Davis, Moldanado and Hudleston especially impressed him in the four games. “They never give up. They have consistently gotten better as the weeks have passed.

“I’ve got some freshmen that have really stepped up to the challenge and have performed well. I think we are all ready for league to start, and to see how these kids develop throughout the year.”
