A man sentenced to Napa State Hospital after attacking the mayor of Woodland has been denied release, according to the Woodland Daily Democrat.

The Daily Democrat is reporting that Napa State requested the release of Burton Day, 51, who broke in to the home of mayor Gary Sandy in 2002. A Yolo County judge, the Daily Democrat reports, denied the hospital's request.
Day, according to the newspaper, beat the mayor with a club inside the mayor's home in October 2002.

In his 2003 trial on attempted murder charges, Day, a schizophrenic according to the newspaper report, was ruled insane and he was sent to Napa State.
Napa State recently recommended a Fresno outpatient treatment program, but the judge ruled late last month the location was not proper for Day, so the judge denied Day's release, the newspaper reported.

At the time of the attack, Day was head of a Woodland-area Libertarian party. He reportedly obtained the mayor's address from voting records.
