Walking the beat in Alta Heights

This is an open letter to Alta Heights residents. A heads-up and a for-your-information letter.

There will be new sidewalks, all the way along the east side of East Avenue, from the school to Clark Avenue. I do not know if this plan continues on past Clark. I happened to see some men making blue marks on East Avenue. When I asked what the marks were for, they said, “Sidewalks!”
On chasing this down, I reached Mark Tomko, project manager for this newest improvement for Alta Heights. He said this had been in the paper for several years, so we could have attended meetings about these new sidewalks. There were meetings four or five years ago that involved local residents and others from the powers that be. Does anyone know anyone from Alta Heights (local) who attended?

This is called “traffic calming.” It is federally funded and its purpose, as with the bike path marking, is to provide a safe route program. Money that is set aside from the federal government does not include paving East Avenue.
There will be no planned meeting before this starts. If anyone is interested in any aspect of this fifth new improvement to Alta Heights, some people to call are Mark Tomko, Farid Javandel, and Dimitri — all to be found in the Public Works Department, 257-9520. When I asked about notification to those who live on East Avenue, I was told they had all received letters.

" Am I missing something? What is wrong with sidewalks? Have you ever tried to walk down east ave with cars flying past? Sidewalks will be a nice improvement, especially with all the children that walk to and from school. "

" Sidewalks are great yet paving East Ave is sorely needed. "
