Ring in the Year

It’s New Year’s Day, a time for hangovers, resolutions and lucky foods. Have you taken care of all three yet?

Ready or not

It may occur during your return drive from the snow-covered Sierras or as you carefully box up the last tree ornaments in preparation for next year’s trimming.

Trends

To most consumers, one bottle of wine looks pretty much like another, and vintages don’t really matter.

Reviewing the wines of the 2008 vintage

Face it — any good wine writer can taste a wine and rate it. Mere bagatelle and certainly not good enough for Register readers who want to be in the very vanguard—ahead of the wine curve as it were.

One cold New Year's Eve

On a recent evening our two best pals, grandsons Robbie, now 11 and Phil, all of 7, were seated at grandma's large kitchen table in grandma's kitchen. After the prayers were said, we began digging into grandma's delicious pot roast, gravy and noodles.

International Sportsmen's Exposition coming next month

California’s largest outdoor and travel event is coming to our area next month.

'Girls Gone Wine'

Three women own a winery in Oklahoma called “Girls Gone Wine,” a name they registered with the U.S. Patent and Trademark office last February.

Through the looking glass

Redwoods in your garden

Probably most of you do not have a pet redwood tree growing in your garden, even though redwoods are native to the Northern California coast.

What do we demand from our government?

At press time, the Iowa caucus -- and the official start of the 2008 election -- will be 24 hours away.  We know what to expect over the next few months. Some of it will be inspiring, most of it predictable -- and far too much of it, trivial.

Trust administration

Dear Len & Rosie, My mother-in-law passed away last week. She has a trust, with her six children named in it. Her oldest daughter is the trustee. What are the trustee’s immediate duties and responsibilities? Should she reassess the family home? File taxes? Close bank accounts? Notify beneficiaries?

Thoughts about Christmas

We have been through tremendous changes as a county and as a world, and it seems like the speed of change is increasing. Now when I think about Christmas, I think about how even something that was once so stable, so familiar and comforting, is going through its own changes.

Back Room Wines moving to First & Main

Back Room Wines, the wine shop and tasting bar on Franklin Street in downtown Napa is moving to a larger space at First and Main streets.

A time to reflect

It's almost over. 2007 is about to be history. How did you do? Was it a productive year? Is there much you'd like to change? We all get another chance. It's called 2008 -- a new page, another crack at perfection or at least another crack at improving.
