Napan playing Junior ‘A’ hockey in Manitoba
By MARTY JAMES, Executive Sports Editor
NOTES AND QUOTES for a Christmas Day in the Napa Valley:
Jared McIntosh, who is from Napa, is a forward for the Winkler Flyers, a Junior “A” hockey club based out of Winkler, Manitoba, Canada. They are one of 11 teams that make up the Manitoba Junior Hockey League.
McIntosh (5-foot-9, 165 pounds), 19, has 10 goals, 14 assists and 24 points in 32 games for the Flyers. There are three players from California on the team, which plays throughout the fall and winter months.
The Orange and Black got their start in 1980 and over the past 26 seasons have enjoyed many successes, including capturing numerous MJHL regular season and division titles, three Turnbull Cups and one Anavet Cup to go along with a Centennial Cup finals, according to the team’s web site, Winklerflyers.com.
Not only have the Flyers achieved great team success over the years, they have also experienced individual success. In the ’90s alone, over 40 Flyers received college scholarships.
The Winkler Flyers are committed to helping young players achieve their hockey and scholastic goals, while maintaining an extremely high caliber of hockey, its web site points out.
My guests in January on Napa Community Public Access TV-Channel 28 will be Arty “Party” Reyes and Terry Simpkins, the hosts of the “KVON Sportsvine.” The hour-long show airs Saturday mornings at 9 a.m. on KVON 1440 AM.
“Register Sports with Marty James,” a half-hour show, airs Sundays at 9 p.m. and Mondays at noon.
Anthony Malisauskas is the only Napa resident playing for the 18 “AA” Vacaville ice hockey team. Seven other Napa players are on the Vacaville “A” team.
There are seven Napans on the Northstars, an adult hockey league team that is based in Vacaville.
The Cal State Sacramento women’s rowing team, with Napa’s Erin DeGoede at the coxswain spot, ended the fall season by placing fifth out of eight teams in the Open Eight event at the Head of the Lake last month at the Lake Washington Rowing Club in Seattle.
The Head of the Lake — which the Hornets competed in for the first time ever — is the largest fall rowing regatta west of the Mississippi with 2,500 rowers and 500 boats entered in 57 separate events.
Over a shortened course, Sacramento finished with a time of 7:19.18 over approximately 2,200 meters. Washington State won and was followed by Victoria Rowing Club, Gonzaga and Oregon State.
DeGoede is a sophomore.
The Hornets, who return to competition in March, also have Krista Hill, a starter on the varsity eight boat. She has advanced from the novice boat to the second varsity eight and now to the varsity eight. Last year Hill was named as a recipient of a National Scholar Athlete Award by the Collegiate Rowing Association.
Hill had a very good junior year for the Hornets last season. She’s on the starboard side and is part of what is considered the middle four, the “engine room” of the Hornets’ boat, helping to generate the power and speed in races.
A very Merry Christmas and happy holidays.
