John Boyett, quarterback of the section champion Napa High School football team, is one of five finalists for the CalHiSports state Player of the Year award.

Boyett -- already named the Napa Valley Register, Monticello Empire League and Sacramento Bee Player of the Year-- led the Indians to a 38-36 victory earlier this month over St. Mary's of Stockton for the Div. 1 section title.
For the season, Boyett threw for 1,743 yards,  19 touchdowns and six interceptions. He also ran for 1,543 yards, and added a 93-yard kickoff return and an 80-yard punt return to his offensive resume.

On the defensive side as a safety and cornerback, Boyett recorded 70 tackles, two interceptions and one sack.
CalHiSports lists the others up for the honor as Matt Barkley, quarterback for Mater Dei High in Santa Ana; Ryan Bass, running back for Centennial High in Corona; Milton Knox, running back from Birmingham High in Lake Balboa and running back Darrell Scott from St. Bonaventure High in Ventura.

CalHiSports is also including a list of six other players that readers can vote on to add to the list of Player of the Year finalists.

" What an honor Johnny B. It was a pleasure to have had the chance to coach you from time to time way back in those little league days…and an even greater pleasure to watch you grow into such an outstanding athlete. You always give more than is asked of you on the field, and I hope to see more in the coming years. Guess I’m going to have to get a Ducks hat! Congratulations! Coach P. "

" Congrats to Mr Boyett and all the Napa High Indians 2007 Section Champions. Not only were you outstanding on the football field but class gentlemen, many time at end of games taking the knee and not running up scores. We are all very proud. You should have been the Div II rep to state. You beat the team that was a shoo in for that spot and no one expected it. John knows the value of "Team" and that he wouldn't be in the position for this honor without all around him. Alot of great talent has been nominated and all were important to the successes of their programs, but from a public school like Napa, it is double the empphisis on the value of John to his team...Congratulations again and good luck.. Ed Rapp Napa High Class 1975 "
