Five members of the Vintage High School girls wrestling team competed in the Castro Valley Classic at Castro Valley High School this past weekend.

Senior Jean Rabaino led the way for the Crushers with a fourth-place finish and a 3-2 record. Rabaino was in control late into the second period of her final contest when a slip led to her being pinned. Rabaino entered the weekend ranked fourth overall at 154 pounds and should keep her ranking following her performance.

Myka Murphy, Tiffany Hui, Alexis Soto and Chelsi Aguayo all wrestled well for the Crushers, but did not place.

“This was the first tournament this year for most of these girls and we were a bit rusty,” said Vintage coach Rob Lanterman. “On top of that, for as long as I’ve been involved we’ve just never made a good showing at this tournament. It’s not that the competition level is any better than anywhere else, it’s just one of those quirky things I guess. Lucky for us, our next tournament at East Union High School in Manteca (on Dec. 29) on is one where we’ve always come alive.”

Vintage currently has 10 wrestlers on its girls team and hopes to have the full squad on the mats for the 10th annual ASICS Napa Valley Girls Classic, hosted by Vintage, on Jan. 11 and 12, 2008. The Girls Classic is the country’s oldest and second only to the USGWA National Championships in terms of overall competitors with nearly 300 wrestlers expected for this year’s event.

Varsity Girls Basketball

• Napa Christian 40, Orinda Academy 13

Marcy Chislom had 18 points, 13 rebounds, two steals, two blocked shots and two assists to lead visiting Napa Christian in Monday’s game. Ruby Schuler had seven points, seven assists, five rebounds and four steals. Lourdes Hernandez had nine points, seven rebounds and four assists for Napa, which led 19-8 at halftime, played well on defense and saw its offense come alive in the fourth quarter.

Napa suited up just five players.

Varsity Boys Basketball

• Franklin-Elk Grove 72, Vintage 57

The Vintage Crushers were led by Ben Molinari, who had 17 points and four rebounds; Allan Samaniego with 11 points; and Aaron Speller with 10 points.

This game was very intense in the first half, with both teams shooting well from the field, and Franklin on its heels much of the first half. Julian Welch of Franklin had 27 points in his team’s win over the Crushers.

Vintage visits Sheldon-Sacramento today.

JV Girls Basketball

• Napa 39, Armijo 38

With no time left on the clock, Morgan Benson made a free throw after being fouled on a last second shot and Napa improved to 4-4 overall. The scoring leader was Jenna Priest, who also received All-Tournament honors, with 12 points. Shelby Singer had nine, Alex Robben six, and Morgan Benson five. Caitlin Bubak led the team in rebounds and Mackenzie LeMasters paced the defense.
