St. John the Baptist Catholic School students boogied their way toward raising more than $30,000 for the school’s educational programs and scholarships.  

More than 200 students from kindergarten to 8th grade ran lap after lap one October day at the school’s annual Jog-A-Thon at Rotary Park.  

The disco theme, complete with musical anthem “Boogie Wonderland,” was supported by students wearing a commemorative T-shirt designed by eighth-grader Annabelle Huffman. The shirt featured a spinning disco ball and dancing character.  Some students donned fright wigs and crazy glasses for extra effect.  

In total, students walked, jogged, ran and danced more than 6,600 laps around the track. Most ran between 20 and 40 laps.  

A water station was a popular stop, especially for St. John’s junior high students. Overall, runners either consumed or dunked themselves in a total of 300 bottles of water.  

While students brought in more than $30,000 in pledges from supporters, local business sponsors also were generous, providing $8,000 for enrichment programs and scholarships.

Students with the most pledges and laps jogged earned various rewards, including a popular “Jump for Dollars” challenge and Limo Ride to Lunch.

“The day was a great success, thanks to our local business sponsors, the students, teachers and the many volunteers that made this whole day possible,” said Katie Batt, who chaired the event.

Community Projects

In November, Community Projects, Inc., approved donations of $17,800 to four local groups.

• The Volunteer Center of Napa State Hospital, to help pay for gifts for each individual living at the hospital.

• Napa Valley Food Bank, to cover transportation costs.

• Vichy Elementary School, to fund a mathematics festival.

• Vintage High School, for emergency backpacks and for the science department.

These donations are made possible by funds raised at the Community Projects Thrift Shop, 715 Franklin St., Napa. Shop hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday thru Saturday. Donations can be made from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday thru Saturday.
