Christmas in Napa During World War II

During my lifetime, I have been witness to a lot of Christmas seasons — 78 to be exact — and that’s a lot. As I reflect on the past, I think the most meaningful ones for me were the four that occurred during the 56 months of World War II.

Wine glasses of tomorrow

When my wife and I were married, we received a full set of Baccarat Champagne flutes. How fancy!  One could get goose bumps just drinking out of these prestigious, expensive, crystal glasses; only there was a catch. The diameter of the rim was so small, I couldn’t get my nose in it, and so, in order to sip my wine, I had to tip the glass back so far that I looked like a sword swallower. Later, I wrote a light piece in which I suggested Baccarat cut a u-shaped niche in the rim so a nose could fit.
