Dear editor, When I was in my late teens and early twenties, my wife and I were working to attain the American dream.

But it was the 1960s and there was a war going on: Vietnam. Many of those that we graduated with in 1964 didn’t return from that war. I was reminded and deeply moved by a high school concert choir singing songs, modified for high school, from the play “Miss Saigon.”

I don’t know how much these young adults have learned about that war in their preparation, but they performed with a passion that had me bawling my eyes out. Mark Teeters, the conductor/director/teacher gave us a glimpse of what is coming up in February. If you saw “Les Miserables” two years ago, you are in for an even greater treat with “Miss Saigon.” If you missed “Les Miserables,” you may have heard how great it is, so don’t miss this one.

Many of the parents of these young adults may not remember much about Vietnam, but I am sure that the grandparents that were there the night we attended were as moved as I was. We send our young people away to fight for our freedom and the freedom of others. When the war is declared over, it is just the beginning for those soldiers that come back having grown up too fast and having seen and done things that they just cannot forget. As a country, we didn’t show them much compassion.
