Trustees of the Napa Valley Unified School District voted unanimously Thursday night to elect Frances Ortiz-Chavez as board president for 2008.

Ortiz-Chavez, a local artist and community activist, was appointed to the board in 2003 and served for the last year as vice president.
“This is a great honor for me,” said Ortiz-Chavez at the meeting, adding, “I have learned from the best.”

She replaces Jose Hurtado, who served as president during 2007. Hurtado remains on the board.
“I would like to acknowledge the continuing streak of great board presidents,” said Superintendent John Glaser, who thanked Hurtado for “all the support and great leadership this year.”

Tom Kensok, 2007 clerk, replaces Ortiz-Chavez as vice president; and Robb Felder replaces Kensok as clerk.
The Napa Valley College board of trustees also elected new officers Thursday night during its regularly scheduled rotation. Bruce Ketron will serve as president for 2008, JoAnn Busenbark will serve as vice president and Steve Reinbolt will serve as clerk. Charles Meng, who was scheduled to rotate into the position of vice president, asked that his name not be put forward as an officer this year. He plans to resume his position in the rotation in 2009.
