Sports capsule: Napa SAL wrestling team second in tourney

The Napa Sheriff’s Activities League wrestling team took 11 wrestlers to the second annual Middle School Classic at Justin-Siena High School, which hosted eight middle schools and clubs from Napa, Vallejo, Rohnert Park, Sonoma, Windsor, Novato and Middletown.

Vallejo’s Springstowne Middle School won for the second year in a row and Napa SAL was second.

For Napa, sixth-grader Noah Cushman, 12, placed fourth in the 88-pound weight class; eighth-grader Stephen “Trace” Denna, 14, took second at 103s with a 2-1 record and one pin; eighth-grader Randy Keen, 13, was fourth at 123s with a 2-2 record and one pin; and seventh-grader Chad Kilpatrick, 13, won the 85-pound class with a 2-0 record.

Seventh-grader JonVan Lucero, 11, placed third at 61 pounds with a 3-1 record and two quick pins — one in 43 seconds and the other in 29 seconds; seventh-grader Jordan Mitchell, 12, finished second at 97s with a 2-1 record and a 26-second pin; fifth-grader Adam Muth, 10, was fourth at 61s with a 1-2 record; and eighth-grader Jeff Muth, 13, captured the 132-pound category with a 3-0 day highlighted by a pair of pins.

Anthony Schweitz, a 13-year-old seventh-grader, took third at 119s with a 1-1 record and a 20-second pin; eighth-grader Caleb Stubbs, 14, finished fourth at 143s with a 1-2 record and a 53-second pin; and sixth-grader Caleb Tremblay, 11, took second at 92s with a 2-1 record and a 43-second pin.

Other boys champions included Max Schimm (75) of Sonoma’s Adele Harrison Middle School; Middletown’s Nolan Tkachenko (125); and Springstowne’s Dominic Morales (105), Chris Dollete (119), Anthony McClinton (140) and Jeremy Tabilos (155 and over).

Girls champions included Creekside’s Haley Bradford (90) and Springstowne’s Delaney Wong (80), Annabelle Molina (105), Kresta Tabaranza (116), Kelly Hoang (140), Katrina Abueg (165 and over) and Alyssa Wong (125), who was a two-time tournament champion.

The Napa SAL club practices from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Vintage High cafeteria and welcomes new members. There is no cost to participate. Its next competition will be the Novice Scrimmage at Springstowne Middle School on Jan. 10.

Youth baseball sign-ups Wednesday

Early bird sign-ups for Babe Ruth/Cal Ripken baseball players ages 6 to 18 will be held at Replay Sports on Jefferson Street in the Grape Yard shopping center. New players need to bring a birth certificate to verify age. Playing age for the 2008 season is your age on April 30, 2008. Sign-up dates are from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. You can also sign up on line at www.napa.baberuthnetwork.com.

Napa Saints fundraiser at SaberCats game

The Arena Football League’s San Jose SaberCats will donate to the Napa Saints youth football program one-half of sales of tickets bought by those who say they are supporting the Napa Saints at their 7:30 p.m. game on March 15 against the Arizona Rattlers at San Jose’s HP Pavilion.

The event is part of the Cats in the Community Fundraiser Program and is designed to benefit Little League or Pop Warner teams, high school athletic booster clubs, and any other non-profit or charitable organizations. In addition to donating more from tickets sales this year, the SaberCats have also expanded the number of seating options available at the Arena — excluding Sideline Club seats.

Vintage High Crab and Pasta Feed Jan. 19

The 30th Annual Vintage High School Athletic Boosters Crab and Pasta Feed is Jan. 19, starting at 6 p.m. in the Chardonnay Hall at Napa Valley Expo. This event benefits the athletic programs at Vintage High School.

The all-you-can-eat dinner is at 7 p.m. and will include salad, pasta, crab and Sciambra Bakery French bread. Napa Valley wine and Starbucks coffee will be included with dinner. No corkage fee will be charged to those who bring their own beverage.

There will be a silent auction, live auction and decadent dessert auction. The Brian Cline Band will provide entertainment from 9 p.m. to midnight. You must be 21 or older to attend.

Napa High needs head track and field coach

Napa High School has an opening for a head track and field coach for the 2008 season. This paid position begins in February and ends in mid-May. The coach will be responsible for both the boys and girls teams.

City of Napa youth basketball league deadline Dec. 13

The city of Napa’s Community Resources Department is offering a youth basketball program.

Registration is now being accepted for the winter. The program is set up so that boys and girls, 7-12 years old, have the opportunity to learn and develop basketball skills.

The fee is $70 per player and registration will be accepted on a first come, first served basis through Dec. 13.

Each team consists of 10-12 players of the same age group to ensure equal playing time for everyone. Each team practices one hour and one day per week, between Monday and Friday at a school to be announced.

Practices will begin the week of Jan. 7 and games will begin Feb. 2. This program has been designed to provide the opportunity for a positive learning experience in a fun environment for boys and girls of all skill levels. Volunteer coaches are always needed and should sign up early for the greatest selection of practice times.

City youth basketball league has Jan. 2 deadline

The city of Napa’s Community Resources Department is offering a youth basketball league for 4 to 6 year olds. The season goes from Jan. 5 through Feb. 2 at the Redwood Middle School gym. The cost is $50 per player. The mini-hoop stars will meet for 50 minutes per week for five consecutive weeks. All players will be assigned to a team on Jan. 3. Napa Valley Water Polo winter camp starts Jan. 7

Napa Valley Water Polo will offer a winter camp from Jan. 7 through Feb. 28, 2008, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The location is to be announced. The camp goes Monday through Thursday, with the boys camp on Monday and Wednesday and the girls camp on Tuesday and Thursday. There is no camp on Jan. 21 and Feb. 18.

It’s open to all athletes age 13 and older (unless a player has club water polo experience). Annual membership ($60) to USA Water Polo 2008 is required for insurance). For more information, go to usawaterpolo.com.

Indoor youth soccer leagues at Mare Island start Jan. 12

The Mare Island Sports Center in Vallejo is offering indoor youth soccer leagues for boys and girls in the under-8, under-10, under-12, under-14, under-16 and under-19 divisions.

Session II starts Jan. 12, 2008 for girls and Jan. 13 for boys. The registration deadline is Jan. 7, 2008. League fees are $595.

Justin-Siena needs event coaches for track and field program

Justin-Siena High School is looking for various event coaches for its track and field program. Candidates should be experienced and knowledgeable in the sport either as an athlete or coach.

This paid position begins in February and ends in mid-May. It is preferred if the candidates specialize as a jumps or sprints coach, but the program is open to coaches with experience in other events. They also will work closely in coordination with the varsity program and head coach Michael Douglass.

This is currently a walk-on position with the possibility of teaching full-time in the future depending on the candidate’s teaching background.

The Napa Junior Lacrosse Club is now accepting registrations for the Northern California Junior Lacrosse Association 2008 season. The NJLC hopes to field eight teams this year.

Junior golf sessions at Vintner’s Golf Club on Saturdays

The Vintner’s Golf Club in Yountville is offering junior golf sessions every Saturday. Sessions, open to all ages and all skill levels, run from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. and 3 to 5 p.m.

The cost is $25 per player per session.

Sessions will cover golf instruction for all skill levels, golf etiquette, general golf rules, daily contests and skills challenges.

Advance reservations are required, and players need to check in 10 minutes prior to a lesson at the driving range.
