A hit-and-run accident sent and 39-year-old Napa woman and her 9-year-old daughter to the hospital Friday afternoon and landed an 18-year-old Napa man in jail.

The accident happened at 4:35 p.m., at the intersection of Shetler and Soscol Avenues. Napa Police reports indicate that Alfonso Franco was driving south on Soscol Avenue when he entered the intersection and collided with the woman who was driving east on Shetler Avenue. Witnesses told police that the woman had a green light when she was hit by Franco according to police reports.
After the collision, Franco left his vehicle and fled on foot from the scene of the accident police said. Shortly after, firefighters arrived extricated the woman from the wreck. Police reports show that the woman sustained major internal injuries and broken bones. Her daughter, who was also riding in the car, sustained minor injuries. Both were taken to Queen of the Valley Medical Center for treatment.

Police investigators traced Franco through his vehicle’s previous owners and arrested him on suspicion of felony hit-and-run after he admitted to them that he was the driver that was involved in the wreck police said. Franco was an unlicensed driver and had no insurance at the time of the wreck according to police reports. Police closed Soscol Avenue for about an hour as they investigated the accident. Police said that alcohol was not a factor in this incident.

" This poor woman, if she makes it (and I pray that she does), will have years of recovery and pain ahead of her as well as continuing bills, loss of work, etc. She will have to sue her own insurance company for whatever her uninsured motorist coverage is, which is usually barely enough to pay for her hospitalization bills. This is a prime example of what happens when an uninsured or under insured person gets behind the wheel and hits someone. It is the victim who pays for it, over and over. I know, it happened to me and 10 years later, I am still paying for it physically, mentally, and financially. This kid thought of no one but himself when he got behind that wheel and then could'nt even take responsibility for what he did. He didn't try to help this poor woman and child, didn't even know if they were alive, and obviously didn't care about anyone but himself. I personally hope that he goes to prison, we need people like him off the streets in more ways than one. God bless this poor woman and child and I pray for their quick recoveries. "

" Franco should do time for this. I hope Ms. Shetler makes a full recovery and her insurance doesn't give her any crap. "

" No license? No insurance? Somebody better make a public example out this person, or we the public will! Since he'll probably get off without any consequences in our current legal environment, let's at least try to prevent someone else from being stupid. "

" Gee what a surprise? How much more do the law abiding legal citizens have to pay now? Good luck to the innocent victims. "

" I saw this accident happen, I was on the way to my best friend Laurice Taylor's 21st birthday with a friend of mine and I said, "Dang, that looks pretty bad" and my friend of mine agreed with me, I hope the mother/daughter survives this accident before Christmas. "

" Get used to it. This kind of situation will just happen more and more in this ever growing population here in Napa. "

" What a loser! Lucky I wasn't there, he would'nt have gotten far before he was taken down quick. There is no punishment fit for someone like that. "

" I have been hit twice by unlicensed drivers. Thankfully my injuries were very minor. We need to crack down on unlicensed drivers! "
