When he’s not entertaining music lovers with his angelic voice, Michael Caldwell can be found helping teammates win big on a local baseball diamond.

With baseball season behind him, the wine country youth is, so to speak, singing for his supper.
And just in time for the holidays, the talented seventh grader has recorded a compact disc of Christmas songs, ranging from traditional carols to pop classics associated with Andrea Bocelli and Celine Dion.

A former member of two local youth choirs — Voena and St. Helena Children’s Choir — the Yountville native has just released “Michael Caldwell Christmas,” a nine-song CD that includes glorious renditions of such holiday treasures as “O Holy Night” and “Away in a Manger.”
Michael turned 13 just prior to Thanksgiving. He attends St. John the Baptist Catholic School in Napa and is an avid San Francisco Giants fan — so much so that he convinces his parents that his attendance at the Giants spring training camp in Arizona every year is essential to the well-being of both him and the team.

Produced by Bay Area musician Brett Strader — who serves as keyboardist on the recording — the holiday CD features exceptional renditions of “The Little Drummer Boy,” the traditional British carol, “I Saw Three Ships” and one of George Frideric Handel’s works best performed by boy soprano, “He Shall Feed His Flock.”
Caldwell’s lustrous voice is also a standout on one of the most treasured Christmas carols, “Hark the Herald Angels Sing.”

Also featured are the traditional French carol, “He is Born,” plus the contemporary “Mary Did You Know?” (which everyone from Reba McEntire to Clay Aiken has recorded) and a song associated with Andrea Bocelli and Celine Dion, David Foster and Carole Bayer Sager’s “The Prayer,” which Michael sings in both English and Italian.

Son of Yountville residents Judith and Jay Caldwell, Michael has dedicated his first solo CD to his grandparents, other family members, his teachers and classmates at St. John’s as well as his many friends.

Michael is currently a student of guitarist Taylor Brown, who has toured with Livingston Taylor and Carly Simon, and who will accompany him for the Candlelight Christmas Concert at Carmelite Monastery on Oakville on Dec. 15. Also appearing at that concert will be Megan Scheibal, Nick D’Avila and Naomi Silva.

“Michael Caldwell Christmas” is available for $12.95 in Napa at The Learning Faire (1343 Main St.), The Arrangement (821 Coombs St.), deKor (1398 Napa Town Center) and the Napa Valley Conference and Visitors Bureau (1310 Napa Town Center); in St. Helena at River House Books (1234 Adams St.), Tesoro (649 Main St.) and Pennaluna (1220 Adams St.); and in Yountville at Hansel and Gretel (Vintage 1870), Ielle (Vintage 1870) and Yat-Ta-Hey (6540 Washington St.). The CD can also be ordered by phoning 944-2232.
