The song of the angels -  “Gloria in Excelsis Deo - Glory to God in the highest,” will resound from the rafters of Napa’s First United Methodist Church Sunday when the Napa Valley Chorale presents its annual holiday concerts at 3:30 and 7 p.m.

Conducted by Artistic Director Jan Lanterman and Conductor Mark Teeters, the concerts include carols, winter songs, folk songs, classical compositions and an uplifting contemporary setting of the ancient liturgy of the Mass. Chorale pianist Ellen Patterson, with oboist Suzanne Eraldi and harpist Aja Gianola-Norris, provide accompaniment.
Opening with John Rutter’s arrangement of “The Holly and the Ivy” and ending with the words of the angels sung by Napa soprano Suzanne Clark and the chorus, these concerts span history and culture to create a festive celebration of the holidays in song.

The major work on the program is Canadian composer Andrew Gilpin’s “Gloria,” featuring Clark and Patterson. Gilpin, who rebelled against formal music lessons at the age of 7, is a self-taught pianist and composer. Born in Edmonton, Alberta in 1974, his self-directed learning led him to an exploration of music that comprises ragtime, classical, jazz, pop and everything in between.
More information and tickets for either concert are available by calling 261-6165 or going online to www.napavalleychorale.org. Any remaining tickets will be available at the door the day of the concert. First United Methodist church is located at the corner of Fifth and Randolph streets in downtown Napa./Register

“Secret Corners of the Mind,” an exhibition of mixed media paintings by Sanda Manuila, is featured during December at the Napa City-County Library, 580 Coombs St., Napa.

Manuila’s works focus on the paradox of the union of opposites and reveal two conflicting perspectives, one based on a rational view of reality and the other on the acceptance of the unusual. Manuila constructs layers with casein paints, sponging, rolling, brushing, distressing with cheese cloth, adding collages and drawings. She completes the works by applying eight to 10 coats of varnish.

The show is part of Art in the Library, a juried exhibit program.
