We have a new puppy. When and where do we get a license for her?
You can get a dog license through the county and it turns out they’re relatively cheap — probably one of the less expensive aspects of getting a new canine companion. According to the county, a dog license costs $9 if your dog is spayed, $18 if not.
Grab your written proof that the dog has had its rabies vaccine and proof of spaying or neutering from your vet, and take it to one of these locations:
• The Napa County Animal Shelter at 942 Hartle Court in Napa. That’s off Gasser Drive, behind South Napa Marketplace.
• The Napa County Treasurer’s Office at 1195 Third St. in Napa .
• Yountville Town Hall at 6550 Yount St.
Or you can mail it into the animal shelter.
State law requires that you take this administrative step; all dogs have to be licensed in California. In addition, Steve Lederer, the director of the county’s Environmental Management Department, which includes the animal shelter, told me that the license is the best chance you have of getting your pet back if it gets lost. You get an identification tag that has owners’ information on it so someone who finds the lost animal knows who to contact.
Cats can be licensed, but the state doesn’t require it.
Chipping is another way to make sure your animal gets back home safely. For $5 the cat or dog has a permanent ID marker and, Lederer said, it’s only as painful as any shot. With the chip, the information is shared between counties and it can’t be shed like a collar.
The license fee, Lederer said, helps fund the animal shelter so stray and lost pets have a place to stay until their owners find them. It also funds programs on helping humans become better pet owners.
Lederer suggested calling the shelter if your animal gets lost, whether licensed or not, because after six days there, the pet is eligible to be adopted.
