Dorothy Jean (Garrick) Hendricks, age 74, passed away Nov. 29, 2007, of cancer. Mrs. Hendricks was born in San Francisco and grew up in Oakland. She was the only child of Gladys and Theodore Garrick. She graduated from University of California Berkeley in 1954 with a degree in political science. She met her future husband, Dr. E. Scott Hendricks, at Berkeley. The couple wed in 1954 and moved to San Antonio, Texas, when Dr. Hendricks was drafted into the Army. They settled in Napa in 1959, where they raised their two daughters, Elizabeth (Betty) Beedle and Jeanie Desnoyer.
Mrs. Hendricks earned her master's in library science from Berkeley and worked for the Solano County Library system for 25 years, mostly at the Kennedy Library in Vallejo. The couple remained active with their alma mater through attending football games (Go Bears!) and taking trips with the alumni association. Two trips of note included a cruise in 1999 on the Columbia River and a trip in 2004 to France.
In retirement she volunteered at the Napa County Genealogical Society, putting her astute librarian skills to work. Genealogy was one of her many interests, which also included pioneer history. She and her husband were members of the Oregon-California Trails Association (OCTA), and they attended several OCTA conferences across the West.
Another of her passions was music, specifically opera, which she shared with her daughter Jeanie. She attended operas regularly in San Francisco and Seattle, and went on many opera tours that included famous venues from around the world. Her faithful support of the arts also included the Napa Symphony.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years; daughter Jeanie and husband Donald Desnoyer of Kingston, Wash., son-in-law Kirk Beedle of Redding; grandsons, Garrett Beedle (age 10) and Alec Beedle (age nine) of Redding; and cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her daughter Betty.
A private burial service will be held at Tulocay Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to celebrate her life at a memorial service on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2 p.m., at the First Presbyterian Church, 1333 Third St., Napa, with a reception immediately following at the Napa Elks Lodge, 2840 Soscol Ave., Napa.
