Sports Capsule: Napa SAL wrestlers earn medals at middle school tournament

The Napa Sheriff’s Activities League wrestling team took 15 grapplers to the 2007 Winter League Championships on Saturday at Springstowne Middle School in Vallejo.
The tournament featured nine mostly middle school-age teams from Napa, Solano, Lake, Alameda and Contra Costa counties. Though the majority of the Napa SAL’s wrestlers were elementary school boys and girls, they placed fifth in team points overall.
In the junior varsity competition, sixth-grader Hagen Bresse, 11, took third in the 112-pound weight class; fifth-grader Trenton Bresee, 10, was second with a 1-1 record at 85s; sixth-grader Noah Cushman, 12, was the rrunner-up at 90s; sixth-grader Maggie Douma, 11, took second in the 88-pound girls class, going 1-1 record with a 41-second pin in the second round; and third-grader Alyvia Fiske, 8, placed second in the girls 81-pound girls class with a 1-1 record and 8-7 overtime win.
Fourth-grader James Kenny, 10, was seond with a 1-1 record at 86 pounds; fifth-grader Alexis Macias, 10, triumphed in the girls 96-pound class; third-grader Dakota Macias, 8, finished third in the 78-pound class; third-grader Patrick Ramirez, 8, took home second- and third-place medals in the 60- and 63-pound weight classes, respectively, with a combined 1-3 record; fourth-grader Alec Richmond, 9, was third at 81s; and sixth-grader Caleb Tremblay, 11, took first place with a 2-0 record, on a pin and technical fall, at 93s.
At the varsity leve, eighth-grader Trace Denna, 14, placed eighth with an 0-2 mark in at 106 pounds; seventh-grader Chad Kilpatrick, 13, was first with a 3-0 record, including a pin, at 85s; seventh-grader JonVan Lucero, 11, finished 0-2 at 71s; and seventh-grader Anthony Schweitz, 13, was second with a 2-1 record at 111s, including 28- and 58-second pins.
The Napa SAL Wrestling Club practices from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Vintage High School cafeteria, and welcomes new members. There is no cost to participate. The club will hold its second annual middle school tournament at Justin-Siena High School on Dec. 8. Napa Saints to hold youth football fundraiser at SaberCats game
The Arena Football League’s San Jose SaberCats will donate to the Napa Saints youth football program one-half of sales of tickets bought by those who say they are supporting the Napa Saints at their 7:30 p.m. game on March 15 against the Arizona Rattlers at San Jose’s HP Pavilion.
The event is part of the Cats in the Community Fundraiser Program and is designed to benefit Little League or Pop Warner teams, high school athletic booster clubs, and any other non-profit or charitable organizations. In addition to donating more from tickets sales this year, the SaberCats have also expanded the number of seating options available at the Arena — excluding Sideline Club seats.

NHS Athletic Booster bus headed to Saturday’s football playoff game
Napa High School’s Athletic Booster club has organized a charter bus to Saturday afternoon’s CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division I championship game between Napa and St. Mary’s-Stockton. Boarding will begin at 10:15 a.m. Saturday at Napa Memorial Stadium and the bus will leave at 10:30 for the 1 p.m. game at University of the Pacific’s Amos Alonzo Stagg Stadium in Stockton.
Cost is $25 and includes round-trip transportation, refreshments, a bag of confetti and an Indians highlight film. Riders may bring their own snacks and refreshments and their is a restroom on board. No one under age 18 is alllowed on the bus without a parent or guardian. Cost does not include entry into the game.

Football section championship game tickets to go on sale
Tickets for Napa High’s game against St. Mary’s-Stockton for the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division I championship will go on sale today in the Napa High front office. Tickets will be available at $10 for adults and $6 for students today, Wednesday and Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Friday from 8 a.m. to noon. Napa High School needs track and field, badminton head coaches
Napa High School has an opening for a head track and field coach and head badminton coach for the 2008 seasons. Both are paid positions. The track and field position begins in February and ends in mid-May and the coach will be responsible for both the boys and girls teams.

American Canyon Little League spring sign-ups continue Saturday
American Canyon Little League spring baseball and softball sign-ups continue from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the American Canyon Little League complex, 300 Hess Rd.
The season fees are $185 for youths ages 13 to 17 (Senior League), $115 for youths ages 7 to 12 (Little League), and $95 for youths ages 5 and 6 (T-Ball).
There is $10 off for each child for the early sign-ups and $10 off for each additional child in the same family.
Late sign-up dates are on Jan. 5 and Jan. 12, 2008, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Jan. 9, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the AmCan Little League complex.
A birth certificate and three proofs of residence are required at registration. Baseball players must be 5 years of age and no older than 15 by April 30, 2008.

Napa Little League spring baseball sign-ups to be held Saturday
Sign-ups for Napa Little League baseball will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Garfield Park, located off Garfield Lane. No mail-in registrations will be accepted.
Only complete applications will be accepted.
Application packets are available online at www.napalittleleague.org or at registration. All forms must be completed, including a parent/guardian volunteer application. New players must bring an original birth certificate and two proof of residency documents. See application packet for more information. Players returning from the 2007 spring season only need to complete an application packet unless they have moved, in which case new residency documents are also required.
Boys and girls ages 6 through 12 years old by April 30, 2008 are eligible.
The cost is $85 for those in the rookie league (6-8 year olds) and $155 for those in Little League (majors and minors, 8-12 year olds). City of Napa youth basketball league deadline Dec. 13
The city of Napa’s Community Resources Department is offering a youth basketball program.
Registration is now being accepted for the winter. The program is set up so that boys and girls, 7-12 years old, have the opportunity to learn and develop basketball skills.
The fee is $70 per player and registration will be accepted on a first come, first served basis through Dec. 13.
Each team consists of 10-12 players of the same age group to ensure equal playing time for everyone. Each team practices one hour and one day per week, between Monday and Friday at a school to be announced.
Practices will begin the week of Jan. 7 and games will begin Feb. 2. This program has been designed to provide the opportunity for a positive learning experience in a fun environment for boys and girls of all skill levels. Volunteer coaches are always needed and should sign up early for the greatest selection of practice times.

The city of Napa’s Community Resources Department is offering a youth basketball league for 4 to 6 year olds. The season goes from Jan. 5 through Feb. 2 at the Redwood Middle School gym. The cost is $50 per player. The mini-hoop stars will meet for 50 minutes per week for five consecutive weeks. All players will be assigned to a team on Jan. 3. Napa Valley Water Polo to offer winter camp starting Jan. 7
Napa Valley Water Polo will offer a winter camp from Jan. 7 through Feb. 28, 2008, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The location is to be announced. The camp goes Monday through Thursday, with the boys camp on Monday and Wednesday and the girls camp on Tuesday and Thursday. There is no camp on Jan. 21 and Feb. 18.

The Mare Island Sports Center in Vallejo is offering indoor youth soccer leagues for boys and girls in the under-8, under-10, under-12, under-14, under-16 and under-19 divisions.

Justin-Siena needs event coaches for track and field program
Justin-Siena High School is looking for various event coaches for its track and field program. Candidates should be experienced and knowledgeable in the sport either as an athlete or coach.
This paid position begins in February and ends in mid-May. It is preferred if the candidates specialize as a jumps or sprints coach, but the program is open to coaches with experience in other events. They also will work closely in coordination with the varsity program and head coach Michael Douglass.
This is currently a walk-on position with the possibility of teaching full-time in the future depending on the candidate’s teaching background.
