David Shew of St. Helena prevented a suicidal man from jumping off of a freeway overpass on April 27. Shew is a state Department of Forestry and Fire Protection employee.
Phillip Scott Nixon of Napa stopped an attempted carjacking and robbery at Napa South Marketplace parking lot on Jan. 22. Scott is with the state Department of Mental Health.

An ornament is being hung tonight an the state's Christmas tree lighting ceremony in Sacramento for Scott, Shew and the other 29 state employees being honored.
The Medal of Valor, which started in 1959, is the highest honor the state awards to state employees who have performed an act of heroism to save the life of another, according to the governor's office. Award nominations are made by the employee's department.
