Just in time for the holidays Lincoln Theater in Yountville presents “Second City’s Dysfunctional Holiday Revue,” a raucous blend of sketches, songs and improvisation with a healthy dose of seasonal satire, performed by members of the legendary comedy and improvisation company.

Stylish, witty and interactive, nothing is too sacred in this comedic revue — holiday film classics, family gatherings, improvised Christmas carols, even Joseph and Mary. And if that isn’t enough to get you in the holiday spirit, the Second City troupe is offering its “Second City Improv Master Class,” earlier in the day on Saturday.

In the 1970s, the Second City became a major source of cast members for television shows such as Saturday Night Live and SCTV which also borrowed some of the troupe’s writing and performing techniques.

The Second City was a starting point for some of the biggest names in comedy like Dan Aykroyd, Alan Alda, Alan Arkin, Ed Asner, John Belushi, Chris Farley, Tina Fey, Valerie Harper, Shelley Long, Bill Murray,  Gilda Radner and Joan Rivers..

While The Second City’s style of comedy has evolved over time, its format has remained constant. The company’s revues  feature a mixture of scripted and improvised scenes. New material is developed during live unscripted improv sessions after the second act where scenes are created based on audience suggestions.

“Second City’s Dysfunctional Holiday Revue” at Lincoln Theater in Yountville is set for Saturday, December 1 at 8 p.m. Tickets range from $25 to $55.

The “Second City Improv Master Class” (for which pre-registration is required) is earlier the same day at Lincoln Theater from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The class will explore the fundamentals of improvisation for those with little or no acting or improvisation experience. Enrollment is limited to 16 students per class and performers (or wannabes) ages 15 through 115 (high school age on up) are welcome. Enrollment is $75 per student.
