• CIF State Volleyball Championships

Two heavyweights with strong offenses battled toe to toe for the Division I championship at the 2007 CIF State Volleyball Championships presented by Farmers Insurance at The Event Center on the campus of San Jose State University Saturday. After four competitive games, Lakewood was the team still standing, as the Lancers won their first crown by defeating Nevada Union-Grass Valley, 25-18, 20-25, 25-18, 26-24, and denying the Miners a title in their third trip to the final match.

Mira Costa-Manhattan Beach won its fourth state Div. II title in a row, defeating Northern California power Archbishop Mitty-San Jose for the third straight year. With the 25-17, 25-23, 25-16 win, the Mustangs completed a perfect season and claimed their second straight PrepVolleyball.com national championship.

Harvard-Westlake of North Hollywood senior middle Cathryn Quinn terminated the first three points for the Wolverines in their Division III final with Sacred Heart Cathedral-San Francisco. That proved to be a bad sign for the Fightin’ Irish, who had the fight but couldn’t stop Harvard-Westlake’s multi-pronged attack. Quinn and sophomore Meg Norton combined for 29 kills for the Wolverines, who claimed their first state title since 2001 with a 25-12, 25-12, 25-20 win.

Harker-San Jose, making its first appearance in a state final, was whistled 10 times for double contact and that spelled trouble. When facing a powerful Santa Fe Christian-Solana Beach team seeking its third state title in five years, that was far too many. SFC happily gobbled up those points, got terrific defense from freshman libero MacKenzie Gilbert and dominated the net en route to the 25-20, 25-18, 25-17 win in the Div. IV final.

Co-ed Mt. Madonna-Watsonville may have only 50 students in grades 9-12, but you only need six to make a champion. Using tough serving, steady setting and relentless defense, and getting contributions from all eight active players, the Hawks (30-6) swept Central Valley Christian-Visalia, 25-21, 25-15, 25-12 before a very large crowd to capture their first CIF Division V state championship.
