Napa High girls reach Eagle Eye basketball tourney final
The Napa High girls basketball team broke a tie by allowing just two second-quarter points in Friday night’s 52-39 victory over McQueen-Reno in the second round of the Eagle Eye Engraving Tournament at Rodriguez High in Cordelia.
Napa held a 25-14 lead when the third quarter started and didn’t relent, winning its second game in a row to earn a shot at the title game against host Rodriguez on Saturday.
Trella Chrisco (three rebounds, five assists) and Tatum Souza (three rebounds, two assists) led Napa with 10 points each. Shannon Rankin (eight points, three steals), Kaleigh Marshall (seven points, two rebounds, two steals), Allie Davison (six points, three steals), Kendall Pelfini (four points, two rebounds), Noelle Roldon (two points, six steals, three rebounds), Rayna Chrisco (two points, five rebounds), Taylor Willis (two points) and Gina Solis (one point, three steals) also chipped in good games.
Maria O’Byrne is out with a knee injury and was the lone Indian who didn’t play.

Katie Montez earned all-tournament honors at the Eagle Eye tournament with 16 points and 13 rebounds as the Crushers grabbed the consolation championship on Saturday. Lauren Bishofberger added 15 points and Kelsey Zeller had eight points for Vintage (2-1.
Varsity Boys Basketball
• Vintage 70, Tarlier 67
The Crushers grabbed their first win of the season in Saturday afternoon’s fourth-round BCW tournament game.
Garrett Collins led Vintage (1-4) with nine points, 11 rebounds and five assists while Zack Wagner (11 points, six rebounds), Brad Lloyd (nine points) and Jeremiah Nicolis (eight points) played well.

The Indians fell short in the Consolation Championship game at the Bella Vista Tournament on Saturday evening.
Alex Morales was named to the All-tourney team and led Napa with 11 points, four rebounds and three steals and played great defense in the second half. Tyler Imhoff added 15 points and five rebounds while Gage Harty chipped in 12 points and eight boards.
• Trinity Prep 57, Santa Rosa Christian 20
Dan Streett had 28 points, 11 steals and five assists to lead Trinity (2-1) in Saturday’s road win. Dan Cravalho 15 points and seven assists, Sean Ryan 10 points and Phil Maxson 10 rebounds.
Varsity Wrestling
• Braves earn tourney ribbons
The Braves took six grapplers to Friday’s Marin County Athletic League Novice tournament and five brought home ribbons .
Freshman Spencer McGuinn (119 pounds) placed first going 3-0 with two pins and a double-overtime 15-14 win over a Drake foe. Freshman Jake Bartlett (215) grabbed a second-place finish after going 1-1 with a pin, freshman John Blanchard (103) was third after two pins and a 3-1 finish, freshman Deborah Jojola (112) placed third going 2-1 with a pin, junior Merik Mulcahy (171) was third at 1-1 with a pin. Bryan Bryne also wrestled well in going 0-2.
College Men’s Basketball
• Napa Valley 81, Alameda 80, OT
The Storm pulled through another another barn burner Saturday evening in the third round of the Consumnes River Tournament in Elk Grove. Ashton Foster led Napa Valley with 21 points despite only playing two first-half minutes after he ran into foul trouble early on. Andy Medieros and Matt Jenkins added 20 and 18 points, respetively.
Napa Valley play Merced today at noon in the Consolation Championship game.
JV Boys Basketball
• Galt 67, Napa 64, OT
• Bella Vista 59 Napa 39
In a wild finish Friday evening, the Indians had an apparent comeback victory aginst Galt foiled by an error at the scorer’s table in the Oakmont JV Basketball Classic. After trailing by double-digits for most of the game, Napa mounted a comeback charge in the fourth quarter.
The Indians trailed by just two points when Mario Giovannoni was fouled while shooting with 21.6 seconds remaining. Galt committed three lane violations on Giovannoni’s free-throw attempts, giving him a total of five tries to make the two free throws that tied the game at 60.
On Galt’s next possession, Nick Roberts had a steal and finished with a lay-up to give the Indians their first lead of the evening with 14 seconds remaining.
Napa’s lead was short-lived, as after a long huddle at the scorer’s table, the referees concluded there had been an error with the scoreboard and deducted two points from the Indians. The game then went into overtime and Galt prevailed.
Ellis Good led Napa with 15 points and 17 rebounds. Joe Gagetta added 14 points and seven boards. Roberts added 14 points and Giovannoni 11.
The Indians couldn’t recover from a slow start in their final game. Roberts had 12 points and eight rebounds, while Giovannoni added 11 points and five rebounds and Good had eight points and four boards.
