The HealthQuest powerlifting team performed very well at the World Bench Press and Deadlift Championships, held in Anaheim from Nov. 14-21. There were over 600 lifters from around the world competing.

Coach Mike Bonifield took a first and third place and set a state record with a bench press of 363.5 pounds; Dr. Bob Urrea took a third place with a bench press of 319 pounds; Dr. Bob Nasser took a third place with a bench press of 264.5 pounds; Kenny Kirk took a second place with a bench press of 215 pounds and a fourth-place deadlift of 370 pounds; Peter Murphy took a first place with a deadlift of 523 pounds and was awarded best lifter; Maria Vermes took a first place with a bench press of 85 pounds and second place with a deadlift of 264.5 for a state record; and Josh Vermes took a first place with a deadlift of 264.5 pounds and set a state record./Register

Napa Valley Swim Team members reach JO’s

Nineteen Napa Valley Swim Team members have qualified for Pacific Swimming’s 14-and-under Junior Olympics, to be held Nov. 30 through Dec. 2. The meet will be held at Oceana High School in Pacifica. Swimmers must achieve Junior Olympic time standards for each event entered.

Napa LL spring baseball sign-ups Dec. 8

Sign-ups for Napa Little League baseball will be held Dec. 8, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Garfield Park, located off Garfield Lane. No mail-in registrations will be accepted.

Application packets are at www.napalittleleague.org or at registration. New players must bring an original birth certificate and two proof of residency documents. Returning players do not need to complete a packet unless they have moved, in which case new residency documents are also required. Boys and girls ages 6 through 12 by April 30, 2008 are eligible.

The cost is $85 for those in the rookie league (6-8 year olds) and $155 for those in Little League (majors and minors, 8-12 year olds). There is a $15 per player mandatory fee that the league collects and pays for city-wide field maintenance.

American Canyon LL sign-ups resume Dec. 1

American Canyon Little League spring 2008 baseball and softball sign-ups continue Dec. 1, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Dec. 8, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. All sign-up dates will be held at the American Canyon Little League complex, 300 Hess Rd.

The season fees are $185 for youths ages 13 to 17 (Senior League), $115 for youths ages 7 to 12 (Little League), and $95 for youths ages 5 and 6 (T-Ball).

There is $10 off for each child for the early sign-ups and $10 off for each additional child in the same family.

Late sign-up dates are on Jan. 5 and Jan. 12, 2008, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Jan. 9, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the AmCan Little League complex. A birth certificate and three proofs of residence are required at the time of registration.

Baseball players must be 5 years of age and no older than 15 years of age by April 30, 2008.

Softball players must be 7 years of age and no older than 15 years of age by Dec. 31, 2007.

Youth basketball league deadline Dec. 13

The city of Napa’s Community Resources Department is offering a youth basketball program.

Registration is now being accepted for the winter. The program is set up so that boys and girls, 7-12 years old, have the opportunity to learn and develop basketball skills.

The fee is $70 per player and registration will be accepted on a first come, first served basis through Dec. 13.

Each team consists of 10-12 players of the same age group to ensure equal playing time for everyone. Each team practices one hour and one day per week, between Monday and Friday at a school to be announced.

Practices will begin the week of Jan. 7 and games will begin Feb. 2. This program has been designed to provide the opportunity for a positive learning experience in a fun environment for boys and girls of all skill levels. Volunteer coaches are always needed and should sign up early for the greatest selection of practice times.

The city of Napa’s Community Resources Department is offering a youth basketball league for 4 to 6 year olds. The season goes from Jan. 5 through Feb. 2 at the Redwood Middle School gym. The cost is $50 per player. The mini-hoop stars will meet for 50 minutes per week for five consecutive weeks. All players will be assigned to a team on Jan. 3. Water polo winter camp starts Jan. 7

Napa Valley Water Polo will offer a winter camp from Jan. 7 through Feb. 28, 2008, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The location is to be announced. The camp goes Monday through Thursday, with the boys camp on Monday and Wednesday and the girls camp on Tuesday and Thursday. There is no camp on Jan. 21 and Feb. 18.

Justin-Siena needs event coaches for track and field program

Justin-Siena High School is looking for various event coaches for its track and field program. Candidates should be experienced and knowledgeable in the sport either as an athlete or coach.

This paid position begins in February and ends in mid-May. It is preferred if the candidates specialize as a jumps or sprints coach, but the program is open to coaches with experience in other events. They also will work closely in coordination with the varsity program and head coach Michael Douglass.

This is currently a walk-on position with the possibility of teaching full-time in the future depending on the candidate’s teaching background.

Women’s handgun course set this week

A women’s handgun familiarization course, offered by the Napa Rifle & Pistol Club, is Wednesday through Friday, from 7 to 9 p.m. each night, at the clubhouse of the Napa Rifle & Pistol Club, 2216 Monticello Rd., Napa.

This class is open to women only, and students will learn about handgun safety, the care and storage of firearms, and how to shoot both safely and accurately. The course covers the subjects that all handgun owners must know in order to shoot targets, as well as to practice the general safe use of any firearm. Students must attend all three sessions. There is a class fee of $10 to cover the cost of instruction materials, including a handgun manual.

Women who wish to bring their own handgun must also supply one box of ammunition (50 rounds) for their gun. If you do not own a handgun, one will be made available for you to shoot.

Boosters to charter buses to playoff game

The Napa High Sports Boosters will charter busses to the Indians’ CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division I football semifinal playoff game Nov. 30 at Elk Grove. It’s open to the public. The busses will leave the Napa Memorial Stadium parking lot at 4:30 p.m. and will return to the stadium parking lot directly after the game.
