Explosion rips apart mailbox

Some residents on Partrick Road got a jolt Monday evening when a explosive device let loose and blasted a custom-made mailbox to toothpicks.

“It was the largest explosion we have ever heard ... our mailbox was in the middle of the road in front of our house ... we were horrified to see that our “cute little green house” mailbox was blown completely up — totally flattened,” the victim wrote in an e-mail to the Register.
Napa Police Sgt. Don Honey said around 7 p.m., police dispatch received three calls about the blast.

An officer was dispatched to the home in the 1100 block of Partrick Road to check out the damage.
“We believe it was a high-power type of fireworks because we couldn’t find any scrap metal to indicate it was a pipe bomb,” Honey said. “But it was powerful, enough to blow off the wood framing and destroy the metal parts of the mailbox.”

At this time, police have no suspects.
One other resident in the area of Partrick Road reported damage to a mailbox inside their gate, also on Monday evening.

“But this just looks like a straight case of vandalism. There was no signs of any explosive material,” Honey said.

" Just a word to law enforcement. I would bet a nickel this prank will end up on the internet somewhere...youtube or myspace or ??? Sorry for your loss. Simply a total disregard for personal property. Shame on the perpetrators. "

" "There was no signs of any explosive material." That quote is either from a crazy cop or a crazy reporter. "

" Whoa! Sorry to hear that happened! And I thought I had problems with my mailbox! (My neighbors and thier employees used to park in front of it constantly.) "

" OK Napa PD.. time to crack down on these guys. This happened off Dry Creek this weekend, although it was in a garbage can that was blown to bits, and in the Westwood area as well. Clearly kids have graduated from egging and TPing, and this is the new prank to pull. Bust 'em and make them pay the people back for the damage. Lets all keep our eyes out and try to help bring these fools to justice. "

" Signs of explosive material means residue or scorch marks. My understanding is the mailbox didn't have any marks or residue... I'd guess it was some kind of CO2 bomb (check youtube, etc.)... Two Cents -- I think Dry Creek and Partrick are Napa SO (not PD) areas... I could be wrong. "
