Giant frogs and argonauts in Berkeley Rep production
Due to a huge demand for tickets, Berkeley Repertory Theatre has extended its acclaimed production of “After the Quake.”
“Since opening in October, the show has attracted rave reviews and sold-out houses, so it’ll keep shaking into December,” the press release read.
In “After the Quake,” a timid man woos an old flame, enchanting her anxious daughter with whimsical stories of a six-foot frog’s fight to save Tokyo. A storyteller can’t dispel the world’s woes, but he can teach a child — and himself — how to face fear.
Director Frank Galati earned two Tony Awards for “The Grapes of Wrath.” Writer Haruki Murakami won Japan’s equivalent of the Pulitzer for novels like “Kafka on the Shore” and “The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle.” Now the two talents collide in “After the Quake,” which the New York Times called “an elegant, economic, gently hypnotic piece of theatre.”
In honor of its 40th birthday, Berkeley Rep has introduced new prices that invite everyone to celebrate. Tickets to “Quake” start as low as $33, with discounts available for students, seniors, and anyone under 30 years of age.
Opening this weekend, Berkeley Rep also presents “Argonautika,” an exhilarating theatrical adventure written and directed by Mary Zimmerman and adapted from “The Voyage of Jason and the Argonauts.” which will be presented in the Roda Theatre, 2015 Addison St., Berkeley.
