School kids around the valley will get a chance to see live theater this week and next as Napa Valley College presents “Bambi: A Life in the Woods.” Based on the original story by Felix Saltern and adapted by James Devita, this Theater for Young Audiences production is directed by the college’s artistic director, Jennifer King.

“We are doing three 10 a.m. school matinee performances on Nov. 8, 13 and 15 for Napa and American Canyon schools and they have already sold out,” said King. “Tickets are still available for the public performances.”
“Bambi: A Life in the Woods” is a haunting tale of growing up. The young deer Bambi becomes heir to his father, the Great Prince when, having encountered love, fear, loneliness and independence, he understands that life is all interconnected and interdependent. Intertwined in this great story is Bambi’s growing awareness of the fragility of the forest environment and the impact of human encroachment on all of the forest inhabitants.

“This is a theatrical and sensitive adaptation where the actors wear incredible head pieces and costumes,” said King. “I was inspired by both the stage production of ‘The Lion King’ and Native American ritualistic costumes.”
The cast includes Teresa Antonio as Mother, Darci Berg as Faline, Erik Gist as Blackbird, Kyle Giambastiani as Ronno, Krystal Johnson as Bambi, Joshua Jones as Gobo, Nolan Kenmonth as the Great Prince, Donica Lumba as Marena, Kalin Mitchell as Hare, Brooke Noska as Screech Owl, Alouisa Sahagun as Ena and Vilma Wakin as Blackbird

“Bambi: A Life in the Woods” marks the first Theater for Young Audiences production in the newly remodeled Napa Valley College Little Theater. Patrons will enjoy new seating, new carpet and wall treatments, a new box office and restrooms.
Performances of “Bambi: A Life in the Woods” that are open to the public are Nov. 10 and 11 at 2 p.m. Ticket prices are $10 for adults, $8 students and seniors and $5 for children 12 and under. All seating is reserved. Reservations are recommended. However, tickets will be available at the door. To make a reservation and purchase tickets in advance, call the NVC Theater Box Office, 259-8077. Box office hours are 1-4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

Due to construction on the Napa Valley College campus, you may need extra time to get to the theater and find parking. Parking is free. The Napa Valley College Little Theater is at 2277 Napa-Vallejo Highway, Bldg. 1200.
