Police are alerting the public to be on the lookout for a telephone scam.

A Napa resident notified police after he had been contacted by phone twice the same person, police said.
The caller, who claims to be a bank employee, says money from the person’s account has been recovered and if the person will give him his bank account name and number, the money will be deposited back into his account, police said.

Anyone who has been contacted by this caller or believes they may be a victim of the scam is asked to call 257-9223.

" I don't know about you, but red lights would be flashing all over the place if someone asked me for my bank account number over the phone. How radically stupid do you really have to be to give it out to someone you don't even know, can't see and is not giving you a physical address of their whereabouts? People seem more inclined to give out their bank info than their cell phone number. This is how identity theft happens and why it is so prevalent. NEVER, REPEAT - NEVER GIVE OUT ANY PERSONAL INFORMATION OVER THE PHONE UNLESS YOU MADE THE CALL AND THEN BE CAREFUL. It happens to children all the time. Someone calls, asks for the address, an unsuspecting child gives it out and pretty soon there is a sexual predator at your front door. Get smart, people or it is your fault if you get ripped off or worse. Don't be a victim. "
