Dear editor,

I have just completed a 16-hour training and education course, CERT, which stands for Community Emergency Response Team. This class is sponsored by Napa Valley College with the help and cooperation from Napa County, City of Napa Fire Department and American Canyon Fire District. This is an excellent training program for individuals to learn how to prepare and react in an emergency situation such as fire, flood and earthquake, to save yourself, family and neighbors before the professional fire and disaster people arrive on the scene.
The course is open to volunteers at no cost, sponsored by FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, for the Emergency Management Institute.

Those who are interested in more information may contact Sherry Vattuone at 253-4580 Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. She is the coordinator for these classes.
My personal thanks to Neal O'Haire, course manager, and his team of professional associates, all of whom have many years of disaster experience, for devoting their time to teach us how to react in these emergency situations.

" Does anyone really think that getting training from FEMA is a good idea? Unless, of course, we're learning what NOT to do... "

" Emergency Response is the reponsibility of everyone. It is definitely not the intent to sit around and wait for FEMA to do something we are capable of doing ourselves. Look at the difference between what happened to New Orleans and the recent fires in SOCAL where everyone was evacuated immediately, adequately housed and fed and necessary resources were utilized. All because the people of SOCAL took responsibility and made decisions instead of "passing the buck". I urge everyone to take the training and become part of the solution instead of part of the problem... "

" After a Democrat wins the 2008 presidential election, efforts to reform FEMA can begin, just as the Clinton Administration successfully rebuilt FEMA after its neglect by George H.W. Bush. (GOPers can always be counted on to point out government's weaknesses because while GOPers hold office they destroy government's ability to function well. "
