A Napa man is behind bars after police say he whacked several people in the face and back with his metal belt buckle.

Another man, who police say may be a suspect, ended up becoming hurt when he was stabbed in the lower torso during a free-for-all brawl in southwest Napa on Sunday night.
It all started late Sunday at a residence in the 300 block of Collier Boulevard. Police responded to a report that a man was spinning the tires of his car in front of his home, Napa Police Sgt. Debbie Peecook said.

A Collier Boulevard resident hollered at the driver, who was later identified as Jaime Alejandro Galvan, to stop, Peecook said. Galvan drove around the block, stopped in front of the man's home and once again spun his tires, she said.
By this time the man, along with several of his neighbors, gathered outside and confronted Galvan, who left and rounded up a group of his friends.

They group returned, confronted the same residents and a fight broke out, Peecook said. "Galvan took off his belt and began swinging it around, striking several people with the metal buckle in the face and back."
During the fight, another man got stabbed, Peecook said. He was taken to Queen of the Valley Medical Center with non-life threatening wounds, she said.

As of Monday, Galvan was the only person arrested in connection with the melee. However, the investigation is ongoing.

Galvan, 18, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.

Motorcycle vs. car

A Napa motorcyclist suffered a minor case of road rash when his bike collided with a Toyota Camry on Highway 29, south of Trancas Street on Sunday afternoon.

James Jude, 45, had pulled onto Highway 29, southbound at the Trancas Street on-ramp. As Jude eased his motorcycle onto the freeway, the bike sideswiped the Toyota driven by Robbie Doyle, 32, of Santa Cruz, who was not hurt, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Jaret Paulson.

Jude was thrown from the bike and sought his own medical aid, Paulson said.

Deal goes bad

Willie Harris' greed may have landed him in the county jail.

On Saturday afternoon, Harris, of Vallejo, agreed to give a woman a ride to Wal-Mart in American Canyon so she could return what police believe was stolen merchandise, police said.

Harris said he would give the woman a lift if she agreed to give him half of the money she got when she returned the items, American Canyon Police Sgt. Craig Nickles said.

The pair both gave their thumbs up on the deal and took off for Wal-Mart.

However, when the woman came out of the store, Harris had a change of heart and demanded she give him all of the money, Nickles said.

"She refused, and he slapped her around inside the car in the Wal-Mart parking lot," he said.

Harris drove the woman home and was able to get some of the money. Police were called and arrested Harris at his Vallejo home.

Harris, 54, was arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery and battery.

Domestic violence arrests

An argument between a husband and wife ended with a car crash and an arrest.

On Sunday police were dispatched to an accident on Highway 29. The female told police she and Luis Eduardo Velazquez were arguing in the Safeway parking lot in American Canyon, Sgt. Craig Nickles said.

The couple left in separate cars. Velazquez rammed his car into the rear end of the vehicle the woman was driving, causing her to crash into a parked car, Nickles said.

Velazquez slammed into another car, Nickles said. He was airlifted to John Muir Hospital in Walnut Creek. After being medically cleared, Velazquez was turned over to law enforcement and booked into the county jail on assault with a deadly weapon and domestic violence.

On Saturday, police took Leo Ignacio Parra into custody after he allegedly assaulted a teen during an argument on Avalon Court in Napa.

Witnesses told police Parra had challenged a family member to a fist fight, police said. Another family member, a 15-year-old girl, tried to intervene. Parra place his hand over her mouth and nose and slammed her into a cabinet, causing minor injuries, police said.

Parra, 33, of Napa was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence and violation of probation.

Drug bust

American Canyon officers pulled over a car driven by Damian Jay Phillips, also known as David Peterson, on Highway 29 for driving with its high beams, Sgt. Craig Nickles said.

When officers confronted Phillips, they recognized him and knew was on parole, Nickles said.

A search of his vehicle turned up five grams of suspected methamphetamine in the front seat, he said.

Phillips, 29, of American Canyon, was arrested on suspicion of possession of meth and parole violation.

" Woohoo! Did everyone see the last entry? They actually pulled someone over for driving around with their high beams on! It's about time they crack down on these people! "

" Common Sense, didn't you read the other entries about street brawls and domestic violence? I think pulling people over for driving with their high beams on is pretty low on the priority list. "

" Maybe it's time, Napa Police Department sets up shop on Collier Blvd. I am the only one who reads more and more about crime there than anywhere else in this town? Maybe it's time to start evicting some of this scum from those apartments! They seem to be the ones we read about so often. What ever happened to criminal background checks? Are these people being screened before being able to rent? I know that used to be how it was when I was looking for an apartment. Oh, wait...that's right...these apartment owners just want their money, who cares if they allow career criminals to rent. Nice! "

" Driving around with your high beams on shows complete lack of attention to driving and dazzles other drivers. In this case the CHP were right - the meth in the vehicle. Glad they cracked down on it, the guy could also have been drunk too. "

" Ha Ha Ha...yeah Common Sense I agree, next we need to go after those scofflaws who fail to signal. Mr. Burns..are you the same Mr. Burns from the Simpsons? "

JimClark wrote on Oct 30, 2007 2:06 PM:

" I believe, Mr. Burns et. al. that Common Sense was being sarcastic. Our law enforcement should be dealing with more than merely high beams, helmets and seat belts. Real crime dosen't seem to be in their "jurisdiction". "

" Tim, just do what I do when you encounter a bad driver. Lay on the horn and yell, "Out of my way, I'm a motorist!" The effect is... Excellent. "

" JimClark- Real crime was in their jurisdiction, evidenced by the meth they found, and fortunately American Canyon Police Officers recognize the signs of a problem and deal with it! High beams can be a tell-tale sign of an impaired driver. They took a parolee and his meth off the streets...don't you find anything good about that? I do...good job American Canyon Police Officers!!! "
