Crushers star wins MEL tennis title

There was no weakness in Tessa Mini's game Friday.
The Vintage High School player unleashed aggressive forehand and backhand shots to all areas of the court. Her serve was on and she was there to return just about everything hit her way in the finals of the Monticello Empire League girls singles tennis tournament.
“I’ve been working on my game really hard and just trying to become a better player,” Mini said after defeating Armijo’s Melissa Rosman, 6-0, 6-1, in the championship match at the Napa Valley Tennis Association complex at Vintage.
“I felt like instead of having one game, like just hitting hard, I mixed up my game with lots of slices, top spin and tried to pull drop shots and going to the net. I made my game more diverse than what it usually is. I tried to make her run back and forth and not hit in the middle of the court.”
Mini’s win capped two very good days of tennis by the Crushers’ No. 1 singles player. She advanced to the title match with straight-set wins over three opponents Thursday.
Rosman won last year’s title when Mini — who also plays in U.S. Tennis Association-sanctioned junior tournaments around Northern California — was forced to retire due to an injury in the third set.
“I played well today,” said Mini, who broke Rosman’s serve three times in the first set and three more times in the second set. “I knew today was going to be a tough match.”
There were times when the two players exchanged long rallies, but Mini came at Rosman with hard shots that often went deep and to different spots.
Mini played in front of a small group of friends, which she said helped, as it’s the last time she’ll play a match at home.
“It was really inspirational, because all my friends were here and it’s my last year,” she said.
Rosman won on her serve to open the second set, but it was all Mini after that. The Vintage player lost only once during the MEL season.
“The way Tessa’s been playing the past month now, I’ve really worked on her mental toughness and focus, so we go into every match with a game plan,” said Greg Ross, Vintage’s first-year coach. “I was so proud of her.”
It was Mini’s third straight win over Rosman this year in MEL action.
“What’s amazing is Tessa’s been playing tennis for only four years,” said Ross. “She just keeps growing with the game and she’s a great student of the game. Her forehand and backhand, she hits with a lot of top spin and a lot of depth. She’s been able to change her game.”
The first-place finish advances Mini to the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division I Girls Individual Tennis Tournament.
It takes place Nov. 8-9 at the Modesto Fitness and Racquet Club (200 Norwegian Ave.) and is hosted by Downey High-Modesto.
In addition to the MEL, the Central California Conference, Delta Valley Conference, San Joaquin Athletic Association, Tri-City Athletic League, Delta River League and Modesto Metro Conference will also be represented.
Mini, who placed third in the girls 18s open division at the recent Bay-O-Vista Fall Tennis Classic, a U.S. Tennis Association-Northern California event which was held at the Bay-O-Vista Swim & Tennis Club in San Leandro, is hopeful of playing tennis at a four-year college.
“It’s been a really good year,” she said. “I enjoy tennis and I don’t want it to stop. We’ll see how far it takes me. I just really want to keep it going because it’s a major part of my life.”
