Vintage's Mini makes it to MEL finals
Hold your fingers about a quarter of an inch apart.
That’s how close it came Thursday to being an all-Napa city final at today’s conclusion of the Monticello Empire League girls tennis singles championship.
Host Vintage High School’s Tessa Mini advanced to today’s 11 a.m. title showdown against Armijo’s Melissa Rosman with a 6-0, 6-3 decision over Wood’s Elyse Gutowski in their semifinal match.
Napa High’s Katrina Castner came within an eyelash of reaching the finals, falling to Rosman 7-6, 7-6 in the other semifinal of the 16-player tournament.
Mini enjoyed a perfect 3-0 outing on Thursday, besting Armijo’s Sherri Dumlao (6-0, 6-1) and Crushers teammate Kara Shurmatine 6-1, 6-4, respectively, before topping Gutowski.
Castner was also spotless through two matches, beating Fairfield’s Judy Nunez (6-0,
6-0) and Vacaville’s Alex Gill (2-6, 6-0, 6-0) before falling to Rosman.
In other local matches, Shurmatine topped Wood’s Ashley Nguyen 6-2, 6-1 before falling to Mini; Napa’s Lindsay Kroyer blanked Fairfield’s Karley Remner 6-0, 6-0 before her loss to Gutowski; and Gill outlasted Napa’s Meghan Dudley 6-1, 6-3 in a first-round match.
Mini and Rosman will play their finale on Vintage’s upper courts today.
