5 p.m.An untralight aircraft crashed just after noon in Lake Berryessa, off Knoxville Berryessa Road, near the Putah Creek Resort.

The two men, in their 60s, aboard the small aircraft suffered cuts, bruises and other injuries, according to Napa County Fire Battalion Chief Kim Thompson.
“The pilot may have suffered a broken nose,” Thompson said.

The victims were taken by ambulance to St. Helena Hospital.
An air ambulance was dispatched to the scene, but was not used, he said.

The float airplane had landed on the lake, and for some reason, flipped over, Thompson said. The men were able to make it out of the aircraft into the water. “They were alert and conscious when rescued by a boater.”
They were in the water for about half hour before being rescued by a boater and taken to the launch ramp at Putah Creek Resort, Thompson said. “There are not a lot of people at the lake this time of the week. The victims were alert and conscious when rescued.”

Mark Andrews, a clerk at the Putah Creek Resort store, said someone stopped by the store and told him about the accident.

“They said get blankets, a boater is bringing in some people whose plane crashed into the lake. I got ice and towels and went to boat launch,” Andrews said.

He said paramedics and firefighters were at the scene within a very short time.

“I stayed out of emergency crews’ way. But I saw the crash victims, and they both walked to the ambulance. The one guy had a pretty busted up nose,” Andrews said.

The aircraft sank under the surface of the water. Sheriff’s deputies hooked a rope to the plane and pulled it to shore by boat.

The identities of the victims are not available at this time.
