Napa fire investigators suspect three young males, maybe teenagers, may have started a series of small fires in the downtown area early Wednesday morning.

The fires did no damage and were doused by a fire extinguisher.
Around 6 a.m., firefighters were dispatched to First Street in downtown Napa. A fire prevention officer who happened to be in the area at the time, put out two of the fires, Napa Fire Capt. Steve Brassfield said.

Witnesses told investigators they saw three young adults running down First Street right after the fires were discovered, he said.
The fires were set in planter boxes on the sidewalk. One fire was at the construction site across from city hall, another across from Caffe Cicero and the last one near First Squeeze, Brassfield said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Napa police dispatch at 253-4451.

" Why are people trying to burn down places in Napa? We have enough trouble with the fires in Southern California. Why try to cause such a problem, not as large, up here? If they were teenagers, why are they setting things on fire? Why can't they be doing other productive things? I feel Napa should have more for teens, rather than just focusing on what we can do to improve the entertainment and views for adults. One idea: if the Cinedome was to move to a new location, use the old Cinedome for a place where teens can go. One or two theaters can show movies, keep the game room, one room could be an indoor skating rink, one could be a comedy room, etc. Why not? "

" To "Writing": Napa should have something for teens? These arson events happened at 6am. I seriously doubt that "having more for teens" would have any affect on a bunch of teen thugs out roaming the streets at 6am. And since when is boredom a justification for vandalism? How about teaching kids right from wrong. "

" The comments from "Writing" and from "Napkin" are both valid. Let's find something for these kids to do. Napa kids ARE bored and it is not their fault. It is for adults to find and fund activities for kids. Napa has a long reputation for being unfriendly to kids, especially teens. It is true and I don't care how you sugar coat it, our kids have nothing to do in this town which is becoming elitist to the point that most activities are expensive and a lot of kids cannot afford them. Took away the Veteran's Park, nothing to do in Fuller Park - no concerts, no games, no nothing. This town sucks for kids. It is great for tourists and rich people, but not for anyone under 18 who doesn't have a job to keep them busy which brings us to another subject. It would be an exercise in futility to even begin to ATTEMPT to discuss the job situation in this town. "

" To Mominnapa, as stated earlier it is NOT the responsibility of the City to entertain the children. Bottom line it is the parents JOB to teach their children right from wrong, period! Being born and raised here, I had no problem finding things to do and staying out of trouble, no my parental unit was not rich, so your argument doesn’t wash. Wrong is wrong whether your are bored or not. Peer pressure is not an excuse for wrong doing. "

" Actually, it IS the fault of the kids and their parents if they're bored. There is absolutely no excuse for kids to be vandalizing public property like that. Sure, all kids do stupid stuff (and I did my fair share when I was a teen), but we never thought that setting fire to public property was ever OK. Why is it up to the city to provide parental guidance to these kids who are terribly bored and apparently lacking any direction? Why aren't parents taking the time to make sure their kids have hobbies or activities? Anyone who says there's "nothing for kids to do" hasn't seen the city's park & rec schedule, nor have they seen the number of clubs and organizations that would gladly accept any interested teen. Photography clubs, RC car & plane groups, music lessons, hiking clubs, the model train group, bowling, movies, and lots more...there IS stuff for kids. You just have to look for it and actually have interests outside television and the internet. In fact, there are more offerings in Napa now than there were when I was a kid growing up in the Sacramento area. And as for jobs, there are a ton of retail and "hairnet & nametag" jobs perfectly fit for teens here. Kids may think that slinging burgers is "lame" or it "sucks", but ask them which is worse...a hairnet, or being broke. "
