9:30 a.m.About 5,000 Northern California hospital nurses are planning to walk off the job after months of negotiations have failed to yield a new contract.

The two-day strike, starting Wednesday, would affect 13 San Francisco Bay area hospitals affiliated with the Sutter Health hospital chain -- including Sutter Solano Medical Center in Vallejo -- along with two Sacramento-area hospitals.
At issue are staffing issues, retirement security and a proposal to shift more of the financial burden onto nurses for their own health care.

Hospital officials say they’ll have replacement workers in place and patients should expect no disruptions in service.
The walkout is expected to take place from early morning through late evening both Wednesday and Thursday.
