The Napa Valley Register publishes monthly statistics on arrests and convictions for driving under the influence in Napa County. Statistics are published the first Monday of each month.

Arrest information is from the Napa County Sheriff’s Department. Convictions, names and blood-alcohol levels are from Napa County Superior Court.
Convictions include cases in which the person pleaded guilty or no contest to one or more drunk driving charges, or where one or more such charges resulted in a guilty verdict at trial.

Vehicle code violations considered are: driving under the influence (Vehicle Code section 23152), reckless driving while under the influence (23103.5) and causing injury to another while driving while under the influence (23153).
The blood-alcohol levels provided by the court are based on a variety of tests — some taken at the scene of the arrest or county jail, others through a later blood test — and have not necessarily been proven or admitted in court. It is unlawful for any person to operate a vehicle if that person has a blood-alcohol level of .08 or more, according to the California Vehicle Code.

Convictions/pleas    84
Reported blood-alcohol below .10 or unavailable    21

Reported blood-alcohol between .10 and .19    51

Reported blood-alcohol between .20 and .29    11

Reported blood-alcohol between .30 and .39    1

" This seems like a long list this month -- stepped up enforcement, perhaps? "

" September's pretty busy, tourist-wise... probably had more drunks on the road. I'm sure the list will drop a bit as the weather gets colder and the crowds get smaller. "

" I wonder if posting DUI's in the newspaper acts as a deterrent to people drinking and driving? If that is so, then perhaps the Register should consider posting the names of parents who are delinquent in paying their child support as well. Maybe this would encourage people to take care of their responsibilities. "

" One poor idiot in the .3 to .39 category! That's the short step below "quite likely to die of alcohol poisoning", and when average folks are typically quite unconscious. I'm glad that person got caught in particular - that's far beyond the "just one beer, officer" place and firmly into "ran over a family and didn't even notice"-land. "

" Jane, there isn't enough room in the paper for that idea. Nice try, though. And not enough women are reporting that child support payments are not made. "

Jane wrote on Oct 5, 2007 9:08 PM:

" Well I guess I have noticed over the years that the Register posts the people who are delinquent in paying their property taxes, as well as DUI's, so my thoughts are simply that if children are a priority in Napa, as much as drunk drivers, and property taxes, then the children who suffer for their parents delinquency could perhaps benefit from this idea. I am only referring to cases that are reported through the District Attorney's office, as this is a matter of public record. Who knows? Maybe it could help lighten the case loads of an overloaded system? Just a thought... "

" I was shocked to read the number of DUI's. I'm curious to know how many of the local 37 people pulled over were here legally?? Any stats on that one? "

VJ07 wrote on Oct 6, 2007 1:22 PM:

" Honestly! How many of those "local" people reported drunk for Sept. were really "tourists"? At least some of the tourists are responsible and desegnate a driver! Maybe "some" could learn from them?! "

Old_Napan wrote on Oct 7, 2007 8:08 PM:

" I'm curious about the whole "Tourist" spin on this story by VJ07. Do you really think that the CHP and NSO actually enforce the DUI laws by hanging around the local wineries? I can guarantee that most of the tourists that visit and taste at the local wineries are at or above the legal limit for DUI. I drive up and down the valley everyday and I've seen tourists "Tasting" behind the wheel! I feel the locals who are listed in this article were arrested for reasons that have nothing to do with to whether the tourists are driving sober. I'm sure if the CHP wanted to setup a sobriety check point anywhere on highway 29 they would have more "Clients" than they could handle. More importantly, I'm sure that a few "High-level" phone calls would be placed to the CHP to cease the checkpoint and go back to arresting the "Locals". "

" Old Napan, I was responding to the comment that vernacular wrote on Oct. 2. You seemed to have missed my point overall. "
