Napa's Auto Row goes online to rev up sales

Vince Compagno takes the car sales business personally. “When I see someone driving a car from out of town I ask myself, ‘What did we do wrong?’” said the owner of Napa Nissan.

He’s not the only one asking such questions. In what could be their most collaborative effort yet, a group of local auto dealers have banded together to encourage locals to shop locally, especially for used cars.
This month Jenson Motor Center, Napa Ford Lincoln Mercury, Jimmy Vasser Chevrolet-Toyota and Napa Nissan launched napacardealers.com, a site that lists hundreds of used cars for sale, from any of the four participating dealers. The Web site also features portals to each dealer’s individual Web site, which details new cars for sale.

Customer convenience was the goal, said Napa Ford dealer owner Kevin Massie, who initiated the joint effort.
Fighting the perception that locals can get a better deal outside the county, and hoping buyers will spend their tax dollars locally, and joining the trend for auto shopping online, Massie wants buyers to see there is a “convenient, effective way to look for a vehicle in our city or county.”

Visitors to the site find used cars searchable by price, make, year and model. On one recent day, 218 used cars were listed for sale. At one end of the price spectrum, a 1990 Ford Aerostar was priced at $3,990. At the other, a Dodge Viper was listed at $53,900.
Massie said he had always wanted to launch such an effort with other dealers.

“We had talked about this for a few years. We finally got it together.”

“We work well together,” said Massie. “We’re not trying to outdo each other. We just said let’s work together to provide a service to the community. It’s good for all of us. It’s a cooperative.”

“In the auto business everyone works individually,” said Compagno. But when city statistics show only 27 percent of county residents shop locally for new autos, “Now we are willing to work as a group.”

“We thought if we could provide more information to Napa car buyers they would shop with us first,” said Scott Jenson of Jenson Motor Center.

“I’m excited about it,” said Bob Kleis of Jimmy Vasser Chevrolet-Toyota. “I think it’s a good collaborative effort. For people that want to shop in Napa, this is a good way to search the vehicles that are here and look at the inventory right here on Soscol rather than going to (other) Web sites or going out of town. This brings (us) together.”

The dealers are also exploring other ways to bring business to Napa, including new signs on outlying roads, more Internet marketing, ad campaigns and branding the Soscol corridor as an “auto mall.”

Meanwhile, change is coming to Soscol Avenue, albeit slowly. The new Jimmy Vasser dealership, now under construction on the east side of the road, is scheduled to open in mid-November.

Compagno expects the rest of the dealers to eventually join in the new Web site. For now, Kastner Pontiac-Olds-GMC-Honda and Napa Chrysler Jeep Dodge Volvo Kia are the only two new car dealers not participating at napacardealers.com.

Bill Kastner said his dealership was asked to join the collaboration but instead chose to focus efforts on its own Web site, napaautos.com. Calls to Napa Chrysler Jeep Dodge Volvo Kia were not returned by press time.

In a time of economic uncertainty and high fuel prices, dealers are looking for new ways to show off what they’ve got.

“A lot of different cities’ auto dealers are working as groups and trying to keep business in their city, and that’s what we are doing,” said Compagno.

" It is nice to see that all these dealers want to work together and have alot of good ideas. what is missing from this article is competitive pricing! I have just purchased a new 2007 toyota camry. I started by visiting Vasser chevy hoping to buy locally and the salesman assured me I would not find a better price around. After leaving the dealership I check with dealerships in Petaluma,Fairfield,Vacavlle,and Vallejo. We ended up buying our new car in Vallejo and saved 2200.00 dollars by driving 18 miles to the south. Vassers price ended up the highest of the five I recieved. For our local dealers 2200. dollars is probably pocket change but for us blue collar workers that is alot of money! This is the first time I have purchased a new car and hope someday to be able to buy another but to buy locally our dealerships will have to be competitive with surrounding dealerships. "

" Don't forget you have 7.75% sales tax in Napa County. Solano is 7.375% and Lake is 7.25% and that means its costs $125 more to buy in Napa. It is cheaper to cross the county line and pay less taxes. And the selection in Vallejo and Fairflield is far better. "

" It takes more than a website. We bought our Prius from Vassar Toyota. The price was the same everywhere on the Prius at the time, although I would have taken the best offer back to the local business to give them a chance to match it. And I laugh at the boneheads who would drive to another jurisdiction because of less than one percent tax differential. The Prius was delivered faster than promised, so that was good. However, after the sale, we are hoping that the new Vassar Toyota facility will include a better service area. We had to wait a week to get an appointment for an oil change. So, since we have work requiring many visits to Sacramento where Maita Toyota offered 'drive-it-in, no appointment required' service that took only 45 minutes, we went there. Now when the new Vassar Toyota opens, we'll be back to take a look, but local Napa dealers are going to have to provide service and support for their after-sales in order to survive. The wife and I give our local businesses first access to our patronage, and we are also telling them what it takes to keep it. ~Ruff "

" I would like to add something about sales tax. I recently bought a Camry out of county and while I was going over paperwork with the finance manager he mentioned the Napa County tax rate. He answered yes when I asked if the sales tax went to Napa. So unless it's done differently at different dealers, the sales tax goes to your county of residence, not the county that you purchase. Good luck to the Napa dealers. "

" I live in Fairfield but have been employed in Napa for the last 10 years.Over the last 15 years I have purchased several cars for myself, wife and children.The fairfield auto mall is a corporate circus with very high overhead and high pressure.I do lots of research before I purchase and have bought from Jenson(cadillac)Vasser(chevrolet)Compagno Nissan(maxima)The prices were very competitive as I know, all new car dealers pay the same for a car whether you have 500 cars on the lot or 100. The service before the sale was very professional.The local feel felt very up front and comfortable.And if I ever have a problem in the future it is very assuring that you will be able to speak to the dealer that is visible to handle your problem, than a corporation that treats you like a number not like a person. "

" Thanks for everyone for the comments on the article. I need to clarify one thing. When you purchase a vehicle in California, you pay the tax rate of the county YOU live in. Not where the dealership is. The tax dollars are then distributed to YOUR county, not the county you did the transaction, however the CITY portion of the tax is kept by the city you purchase the vehicle. So if you buy a car in Fairfield, Napa County get their tax dollars but the City of Napa does not. The city of Fairfield gets the city portion of the tax. In response to Tax Payer above, the tax is the same for you no matter where you buy your vehicle. "
