" Wal-mart is providing jobs, retail services and a financial windfall to Napa County, not just American Canyon. Traffic on Hwy 29-blame CalTrans and legislators-not Citizens of AmCan. Crime? Any establishment of this size will bring crime. Snobbery? If WMart is 'beneath' you don't shop there. That Simple. Retirees on fixed incomes don't have too many choices. $4 prescriptions: Sign me up. Overall, American Canyon will benefit from the sales tax revenue. "

The store in Napa is so successful you can't even find a parking place there so I know this new store will be wildly successful. This is the best thing to hit our area...ever. "

After the next quake this will all make a fairly good warehouse facility for grapes I suppose. Community, what community? This is all just prefabed mono-culture tract and mega strip mall squalor. Hell the only thing missing - maybe it will be added if business is not as projected - is a matching Christian live-in theme park open 24/7. In the meantime I hear the words of Abe Lincoln calling. As for the building itself ..it fits in with the other businesses totally.. and check with Mervyn's and Kohl's ,Target etc. to see how much they pay their employees ..Also their products come from the same countries that Wal- Mart gets theirs from....so ,if people want to save money at Wal- Mart let them !!! " Bettye - Amused is the right word. Some of the posters apparently have their heads in la-la land. Wal-Mart is so successful because it is a good business, not because it is unfair to its employees, customers, suppliers, etc. The United States of America is a country where a small-town independent merchant can grow his business into the largest retailer in the world if he does business in afir way. If he does not, his business will not survive. Sam Walton built his business on a solid foundation of fair prices, excellent selection, and good people. That is the Amerrican way. Those who rant and rave about the evils of Wal-Mart are actaually ranting about their perceived evils of capitalism. Last time I checked capitalism was preferred in the United States over socialism, communism, or any other ism. Wal-Mart is good for American Canyon, good for Napa county, and good for America. "

Unless you are so extreme that you ride a bike to avoid feeding the corrupted gas and oil industry - relax, shop WalMart and save your money for your SUV gas. People are so hypocritical, it’s funny. " It's a beautiful store with great prices and excellent service. Maybe Safeway will open more than 1 check out line now that they have competition. The City of American Canyon needs to complete their American Canyon Road widening project immediatey. The 85% of the pass through traffic is backing all the way up to Napa Junction. Maybe they should just pull in and shop for a while! We love the store!! "

" I saw people from St. Helena in the new Walmart just like I seen them in Trader Joes, Staples and all the fast food restaurants in Napa. Why do they drive 20 to 40 miles just to shop? Don't they have any local serving businesses or fast food in St.Helena? I wonder why? "

Genji wrote on Sep 23, 2007 12:57 AM:

" Wal-Mart stores are well documented for eliminating smaller businesses in their surrounding areas. A superstore with its grocery may be a lethal competitor for the Safeway at Hwy 29 and American Canyon Road. That Safeway is the anchor store in its shopping center, so its closure may mean the end of the center. Wal-Mart superstores are traffic magnets, so we'll see much more traffic added to an already overburdened Hwy 29 through American Canyon. Most of Hwy 29 traffic flows through that city, so the city's people are justified in seeking relief through countywide or regional financing. But the city government approved the Wal-Mart superstore despite the predicted traffic increase. In 2008 we can expect American Canyon politicians to appeal to the people of Napa County for a sales tax increase to help deal with a traffic problem that they have voluntarily made worse. "

Tax Payer wrote on Sep 23, 2007 11:30 AM:

" To Genji, I cannot but respond to your comments: You say, "Walmart is a traffic magnet" Of course it is, people, locals, citizens...shop there! That is the American way! Freedom of choice! Are you saying there is a likelyhood that Safeway will close? Not a chance! You say, "Most of HWY 29 traffic flows through American Canyon"! Well yes it does and it has for 100 years, what is your point?. You say, AM CAN citizens should be able to obtain financing regional financing for HWY 29 traffic. Right, its a State HWY, the state is responsible for it, what's your point? You say that American Canyon will appeal to all of Napa County to pay more taxes to deal with American Canyon traffic? Is that like now where we Napans have to pay for the next 30 years for the $129 Million Taj Mahal AM CAN high school? I don't think that will happen again. Napans have been burned once by American Canyon's failure to deal with its growth but it won't happen again. No sir, no new sales tax increase will happen in 2008. Because, fortunately in 2006 the taxpayers learned that they can ban together and beat a tax increase like they beat Measure H. "

russ wrote on Sep 23, 2007 12:42 PM:

" I am constantly amazed that Napans and other Californians want government to decide which businesses are allowed to participate in our free market. If WalMart abuses its employees and sells inferior goods, it will go out of business. That's the way it should be, not for government to regulate it out of business. Businesses which offer the best products, the best service, the best expertise at the best price will thrive. "

" I had no opinion one way or another since I live in Napa, but every time I have driven by since the AmCan opening, the lot has been packed! I can't help thinking having all those folks who live in AM CAN, shopping there instead of driving up to shop in Napa, HAS to be a good thing. The smallest carbon footprint is the one that doesn't travel. "

" The traffic trying to get home from Napa in the afternoon is worse on a daily basis. Each afternoon since Walmart opened last week there has been an accident. Trying to get out of the Bank of America and back onto 29 has been horrible, the stop signs favor the people leaving The Lodge or Walmart. The parking lot is already full of trash, looks like Vallejo already. "

" 'local firefighter', that's exactly what I am doing... just like I said in a very early post on the issue. Sunday the wife and I were driving back from Redwood City and passed by the 'North Vallejo' traffic jam. It would seem to me that we will soon be hearing lots of whining and complaining about the poor traffic planning and other 'Ooopsies' that our south county brethren forgot to think about. If this is 'progress', you are welcome to waste hours of your life in traffic for it. Me, I'll continue shopping at my local merchants who are going to appreciate me more than ever. Your buddies at Wahl-Mart still won't know your name. And while you are all backed up in traffic, I'll be back home and enjoy a nice glass of ice tea in my backyard. Bon chance! ~Ruff "

" I do appreciate there being a new 24-hour store nearby - everything in Napa closes down by 9 or 10, barring a grocery store or two. I'm a night owl; and even if it is just a Walmart, if I need something later in the night I could head down there. Maybe the Napa Walmart should be closed down? What I *don't* appreciate is the extra 20+ minutes that can now be tacked onto any trip that involves getting to highways 37 and 80 thanks to the awful traffic engineering there, that's treating 29 like a side street in the city and not a fairly major thouroughfare for the entire region. I'd also like to see some "new blood" in one of these pre-fab complexes sometime, rather than the same tired chains. Jamba Juice, Radioshack (which I'm surprised isn't out of business yet as a whole), and Starbuck's - it's like some sort of trifecta of the inane. "

Givepeaceadance wrote on Sep 25, 2007 9:33 PM:

" Okay--Walmart--I boycott it--it puts smaller stores out of business. This is the worst kind of communism possible--although it is quite obvious that the chain originally was founded the people in mind--cheaper goods, easier to by--caters to a working class--much better for all--right? Wrong! and do nothing for all of those poor Ma and Pa businesses that are out there, now beginning to struggle to survive. This is a dreadful thing. America is no longer the homey place that prides itself in its small establishments and towns. This once quaint and charming persona has been tainted by cheaply made plastic items which are imported from foreign countries. This is not only crazy as we could make these items here and provide job opportunities for people living in the United States (the same people that now end up shopping at Walmart since it is so low-cost, I might ad--this comes full circle--people can't afford to buy anything other than at places like Walmart as a result of there being fewer jobs due to outsourced jobs overseas, so they have to shop at Walmart--good foundations for a nice conspiracy theory here, eh?, but also, this brings global warming into play as we are using up ridiculous quantities of fuel and creating enormous quantities of pollution in the process as a result. It would be very interesting to see whether the pollution rate would be effected if Walmart and its kind all shut down. It could be drastic! Anyway, I am completely against Walmart in American Canyon or anywhere. Napa County already has one of the wretched things--there is no need for two. Not only that, but the thing is a blot on a once scenic landscape. I say boycott! "

Ruff Limblog wrote on Sep 26, 2007 11:12 AM:

" To "petebo", in all fairness, the Federal Reserve System is largely another topic. The only relationship to Wahl-Mart that I can see is that as our dollar is further debased by the Fed accommodating Mr. Bungle's wild credit card spending spree, corporate welfare schemes, and as retired Fed chairman Greenspan described it, "oil war", soon Wahl-Mart's ticky-tacky "cheap imports" will cost even more than quality products bought at my local merchants. Perhaps then the traffic clutter around their poorly located site will thin out a bit. ;o) ~Ruff "
