Prep report: Braves girls tennis team guts out 5-4 win over Terra Linda
Worn down and shorthanded during their fifth match in two weeks, the Justin-Siena High School girls tennis team dug deep and defeated Terra Linda 5-4 in a Marin County Athletic League road match on Wednesday.
Picking up their first varsity victories were the No. 2 doubles team of Jeanette Alvarez and Adrianna Schwartz, 6-3, 6-4, and No. 3 doubles partners Sarah Nolan and Tori Roomian, 6-4, 6-1.
In singles play for the Braves, Kelsea Thomas prevailed 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2; Krystalle Franz triumphed 7-6, 6-4 in a competitive match at No. 3; and Vianca Perez-Ruiz held on for a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 4.
Maja Jeramaz lost by third-set tiebreak at No. 1 singles, 7-5, 4-6, 10-6, as did No. 2 doubles players Adrienne Marks and Mira Herrarte, 1-6, 6-2, 17-15.
“We, like the water polo team, suffered from having a couple girls unavailable on retreat. However, our team did a great job rising to the occasion,” Justin-Siena coach Chris Swain said. “We have a young team and a lot of room for skill development. It has been a rough first couple of weeks of the season because we have had three matches each week, which leaves little time for practice.”
After they host Novato at 4 p.m. Friday, the Braves will have two matches a week.
“That gives us a little more practice time to focus on those shots and tactics that will make us more successful as a team,” Swain said. “I am very proud of the way the girls played today, but also know we have a lot of room for growth. We need to work on our mental and match toughness; we lost a couple of matches in tiebreaks — not particularly because we were outplayed, but our girls need to build that competitive and focused approach to playing, which will hopefully lead to wins in close matches in the future.”
