Curling Club to offer class Sept. 21 and 28
Curious about curling? You’ve seen it during the Winter Olympics. Yes, the sport that a player slides 42-pound granite stones on a sheet of ice while teammates sweep the ice in front of the stone to help maneuver towards the target. Some people called it a hybrid of bowling and chess on ice. This is your chance to try.
The Wine Country Curling Club of Northern California is offering Learn-to-Curl clinics for first time curlers on consecutive Fridays, Sept. 21 and 28, from 8 to 10 p.m. at Vacaville Ice Sports Center. Curling instructions will cover fundamentals of delivery, sweeping, rules of the game and safety on ice. The clinic will be run by USCA certified instructors, and will include a short video followed by ice instructions and shortened game.
The clinics cost $10 for introduction to curling and $15 for learn to curl. No reservation is required. Interested individuals should bring warm, loose-fitting clothes and clean sneakers or rubber-soled shoes. All equipment will be provided.
Vacaville Ice Sports features five permanently painted curling rinks and recently hosted a curling tournament, The Crush Bonspiel, featuring teams from the U.S. and Canada, including the U.S. National Men’s Team. The rink is located at 551 Davis St., Vacaville. For more information, call 374-3920, e-mail winecountrycurling@gmail.com, or visit winecountrycurling.org, usacurl.org, or vacavilleicesports.com.
