8:30 p.m.Napa County Sheriff’s detectives continue to investigate the drowning of a Napa teen at Pope Creek Bridge on Sunday, a day before her 14th birthday.

Erin Brookman was last seen in the water late Sunday afternoon. She went under and did not resurface just around the time a friend appeared to be struggling in the water, sheriff’s Capt. John Robertson said Tuesday.
A Sunday search near the area where the Vintage High School freshman went under did not locate her body. The Napa County Sheriff’s Dive Team returned to the lake on Monday morning and recovered Brookman’s body very near to where she went under, Robertson said.

In information from the sheriff’s department updated Tuesday, Robertson said Brookman and a female friend were swimming in about 30 to 40 feet of water outside the temporary barricade directly under the Pope Creek Bridge.
Bureau of Reclamation officials set up the barricade to scale back activity near the bridge, a popular area for boaters, on holiday weekends.

There were several boats in the area where the girls were playing, he said.
“The girl’s mother was on one of those boats,” he said.

Robertson said the Brookman’s friend started showing signs of distress,

appearing to be sick. “She was near the stern of a boat. We are investigating if the girl might have been suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning emitted from the running engines of the idling boats.”

While people in the boats attended to Brookman’s friend,

Brookman must have slipped under the water and did not resurface, Robertson said. “There was a lot of commotion going on with the girl who was sick.”

Brookman’s mother said she had not seen her daughter for about 30 minutes to an hour before the drowning, Robertson said.

Brookman and her mother had just moved to Napa about a month and half ago, said Brian Forrestall, a Napa resident and a longtime family friend.

Monday, the day her body was found, would have been Brookman’s 14th birthday. The family had gone to the lake last weekend to celebrate, Forrestall said.

“She had only gone to school at Vintage for five days before this terrible thing happened. They found her body on her birthday,” Forestall told the Register, his voice choked with emotion. “We went up to the lake with other friends to introduce Erin to friends her own age. She was a freshman at a new school and we were helping her make new friends.”

Forrestall said Brookman was a sports enthusiast.

“She love softball. It was her dream to play professionally. She was a

cheerleader in Pop Warner Football in Rohnert Park, where she and her mother were living before they moved to Napa,” he said. “She was also state wrestling champion in her age group a couple of years ago.”

Forrestall said Brookman was like any other young teen just entering high school.

“She was getting her life where it was supposed to be. She had high expectations for herself,” he said.

At Vintage High School, where Brookman entered the ninth grade this year, administrators acted quickly Tuesday to reach out to her classmates.

“Our ninth-grade counselor is going out to every one of Erin’s classes,” said Vintage Principal Eric Schneider. “The teachers are doing their best as far as their initial communication with students. We don’t want to wait too long before we get (affected students) into counseling.

“One of the most difficult dynamics of the day is the empty desk.”

Sheriff’s detectives are conducting an investigation into the drowning, Robertson said. “We are talking to witnesses and people who were on the boats when the accident happened. We need to get the toxicology test results from the autopsy to determine if carbon monoxide poisoning was a factor.”

" I am so sad learning of this tragic event. Erin went to elementary and middle school with my son and although she did not know me, her death has touched me so deeply. I recall seeing her bright smile when I would go to their schools. I hope that this will get to her family. My deepest condolences to her family. My thoughts and prayers are with them during this very hard time. I will always remember her bright smile. "

" I seem to make a lot of people mad when I point out safety lessons. But, was the young lady wearing a life jacket? It is a sad fact that most of these tragedies are avoidable. $30.00 for a life jacket, or the life of a loved one, which one is the greater cost? I too have lost a family member to the lake. She was a competition swimmer in the 1960s, and tried to swim across a seemingly small cove. So when I write of these things, it is from the voice of personal experience. "

" To the family, I'm sorry to hear about the tragedy and to Vintage High School's Freshman class of 2011, you lost a true classmate that will be in your hearts forever. "

" I am so saddened by this news. I know the family and my heart is breaking for them. They have lived under the cloud of so much heartache for so long and now this.. how much must people suffer! May God be with you! "

" This is such a horrible, sad tragedy. As the mother of two teenage daughters, I cannot imagine the pain and grief Erin's parents are feeling. I don't know this family, and they don't know me but my prayers go out to them. To Skip M., you make a valid point; however, your timing and the platform you use is insensitive. If you feel strongly about the issue, start a lake safety education campaign and get the County Board of Supervisors behind it. In other words, be proactive rather than reactive, which is a much more positive and effective approach. "

" My deepest condolences to the Brookman family. Please don't judge this tragic event, for it was an accident and could have happened to anybody. Susan was a wonderful and protective mother to her two daughters: Erin and Lauren, always participating and helping any way she can with her daughters' sporting events. My two daughters were classmates, friends and on the same cheerleading squads with Erin and Lauren. Erin was a sweet, sincere and beautiful child. Rest in Peace. "

The whole Family & friends are deeply saddened by this untimely and tragic event. Words cannot describe our grief. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Lauren, Susan, and Father Troy. 'Without suffering their is no compassion'. "

" Erin was a beautiful child with so much life ahead of her. We were all together just a few short weeks ago when we stood as a family to say good-bye to Grandma Scott who passed away on her birthday--July 20--at 94 years old. We gathered for a true celebration of Grandma's life and you were there to share in the love we had for her and each other. To say good-bye to Erin in such a tragic way hurts our hearts more than words can say. Now, we will once again stand together as a family and there will be some comfort in knowing that Grandma was waiting to take you in her arms so that you didn't have to make your final journey alone on your 14th birthday. You will always be in our hearts--may you finally find the peace and the love you have always deserved. We will miss you sweet girl. "

" We were on one of the party barges tied up with Erin's family that day. And our friend helped to assist with the other sick girl. This is such a tragic incident and could happen to anyone. We did not personally know the family but passed back and forth amongst thier boat many times that day engaging in conversation with them all. Everyone was extremely nice to us and seemed to be having a wonderful time. This is so unfortunate. On behalf of myself and all of my friends who were there we would like to express our sorrow for the family and wish there was something we could have done to help prevent such a tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. "

" My heart goes out too you Susan and to the rest of your family. Losing a close friend like Erin has devastated Hailey, especially a loving, caring, happy go lucky girl like Erin is. I believe that she is safe in Grandma Scott's arms right now and she is okay. If I can do anything to help please let Hailey know. "

" Erin, you are a great girl and you are deeply missed. Your bright smile would light up any room. I hope that you can be released from the pain that so many people close to you put you through. You deserved the world, and all you got was the opposite. The people close to you love you, they just don't know how to show it. Be free of this pain and lonliness and I hope you are watching down and seeing how much your life made a great impact on others. We all love and miss you Erin!!! "
