Napa water polo blasts McClatchy in opener

The Napa High varsity boys water polo team opened its season with a bang Thursday afternoon with a dominating 16-4 win over visiting McClatchy-Sacramento.
Senior Warren McCann led the Indians with four goals while Kevin Lung added three. Spencer May and Isamu Kita contributed two each.
Joe Pridmore, Taylor Brown, Adam Mokrani, Devon Jones and John Rex Bellosillo each chipped in one.
Brown, Pridmore and Kita posted two assists each, while May and Lung added one.
Pridmore led the way with three steals and D.R. Mast added two.
Working in the goal, senior Kiel Gordon was credited with four saves, including a 5-meter penalty shot.
Junior Stephan Burns also played strong defense in the goal for Napa.
Coach Mike Garibaldi attributed the Indians’ win to strong defense.
“These boys can really play defense and shut down most any team. On offense, everyone adds to our team play with steals, assists and goals. We look forward to a great season for this Napa water polo team,” said Garibaldi.
Napa hosts El Camino-Sacramento on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
Varsity Girls Water Polo
• Napa 7, McClatchy 5
The Indians posted a win in their season opener Thursday.
Junior Erin Komplin led all scorers with three goals on 3-for-4 shooting. Komplin also aided the defense with four steals.
Juniors Jamie Forcier (two goals), Kayla Madole and Cami Zeller rounded out the scoring.
Emma Witt and Forcier chipped in with single assists.
Madole had three steals and a field block. Zeller added one steal.
Witt and her sister, Jessie, had single drawn ejections.
Playing all four quarters in the goal, Alyssa Warrington blocked 13 shots and had three steals.
Also contributing to the win were Maya Bailinson, Kaitlyn Shubin, Sara Douglass and Alex St. Clair.
Prep Boys Soccer
• Jesuit 3, Vintage 0
The Crushers were shut out Friday despite playing well, said Vintage coach Dennis Sweeney.
“Jesuit was very efficient and took advantage of their opportunities,” he said of the Marauders.
Cesar Ramirez, John Enriquez, George Martinez, Brian Visser and Gerardo Martinez stood out for Vintage (3-2) in the defeat.
Prep Volleyball
• Napa 3, Benicia 2
Napa High notched its first win of the season in comeback fashion Thursday night, defeating host Benicia, 20-25, 25-22, 18-25, 25-19, 15-9.
Allie Pearson, Rachel Barbos and Rachel Swanson teamed up for 34 assists.
Lauren DeCelles and Tatum Souza attacked the center of the net and totaled nine and seven kills, respectively.
DeCelles also had six service aces and 15 service points. Kelsey Wallace and Christina Fonville had six kills each.
Maggie Wessel and Katelyn Peer combined for seven kills and contributed three assists.
J.J. Wagoner led the defense with 13 perfect passes and 11 digs.
Caitlin Underhill posted 11 digs and Jane Stier had nine digs in three games.
Thursday’s match was the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Foundation Game and does not count in the overall records of the teams.
The gate receipts from these games are used to fund scholarships for senior athletes.
